It's still $20 but I've been hearing people around here recommend it.

I had been fence-sitting for a long time because I generally do some research on a pricey 1st- or 3rd-person 3D game to see if it's FOV is set well for a close-up PC monitor, otherwise I often get headache & nausea.  This one wasn't, and didn't have a game option to adjust it, so I put it off.

So for others who need to adjust it, this little program Widescreen Fixer can mod that in KoAtR (I hear).   https://www.widescreenfixer.org/

I'm still iffy about the camera placement, as I hear that's also a problem since it's directly behind the character's body - not behind his head or shoulder.  However, raising the FOV should also have the effect of "zooming-out" so perhaps that will help get a higher viewpoint via being able to angle down more.

I tried the demo.  Not for me.  I am not a fan of the post WOW trend in art design to infantilize everything with bright colours, cutesy Anime style characters and monsters, and goofy, over the top weapons and armour.

That was certainly a negative in my considerations.

I'm pretty sure those cutesy cartoonish textures are just faster & easier to create than detailed & realistic ones.  Probably aren't as system hogging, either.  But yeah.. I think it's just easier for them to create it that way.  You'll notice that many of the low budget ones use that style too - less detailed artwork required.

I actually like the art style.  What gets me is the huge exclamation marks or question marks over important characters' heads, but I blame consoles for that.  Anyway, it's a pretty generic story with ok combat.  Nothing great.

Toonces

Isn't this game by one of the guys that did Oblivion and/or Skyrim?  I know that it was being touted as a Skyrim killer (or at least competitor).

I'll definitely be keeping an eye for this to go on a similar sale at Steam.  In general I believe the game was very highly rated, wasn't it?

It was very highly rated and I enjoyed it very much.. But having said that if you can wait for a Steam sale do it. With the IP soon be the property of Rhode Island I would think prices might get reduced even further in the near future (price has already been reduced from $60 to $40 and now $20 in the last few months).

Game is back on sale at GG for $14.99 with the two DLC packs.  As for me....downloading now....

I had to d/l & use the Widescreen Fixer freeware program to get Amalur to run at an FOV that didn't give me a splitting headache.

After that it wasn't bad.   I still got the impression that the game is "on rails" but I guess nearly all of them are when compared to open sandboxes like the Skyrim/Oblivion series or something like Mount & Blade.

I've been thinking of giving KoA another try.  While it's very action-y, the cartoonish graphics annoyed me after a short while, the previous time.   Is any of the DLC pretty impressive or is it just the usual DLC-sized small quantity of extra items and maybe a limited zone addition?  I'm still trying to get into Divinity 2: Director's Cut which is very similar gameplay-wise, and that one doesn't have the cartoon graphics.

Arctic Blast

I initially really like this, but it became very same-y after awhile. Imagine grinding through an MMO, only by yourself, and you pretty much have KoA.

LOL!

May as well play any of a large number of free-to-play MMOs, in that case.  Maybe I'll load Star Wars TOR back up now that it's free-top, instead.

It is kind of like WOW.  Very action and loot oriented.  Some of the dungeons are rail-like (as is Skyrim), but otherwise you can pretty well go where you want and take the quests you want.  I'm about five hours in and having a good time....and I am not normally the twitch jockey type.  My guess is, I'll get another 10 - 15 hours from it before I am bored.

One nice thing for slow guys like me, is that your character auto-targets when you are in the midst of a bunch of nasties, but you can easily and naturally over-ride.

I'm glad I got it...
