Anyone ever see the movie, Captain Alatriste, or read any of the novels?
Just heard about this.  Curious because there is nothing available on the Spanish Empire, and the author acknowledges being inspired by Dumas' The Three Musketeers.
Get an Errol Flynn, Captain Blood vibe.

Damn has Viggo fallen to doing foreign films? I haven't seen him since the "The Road" or some such survival film? Hope he keeps the 'jewels' right where they need to be in this one.

Note the movie is 11 years old.

It's a patriotic take on Spanish history, and similar to the French musketeer story in terms of the church and elements within the state conspiring against the safety of the country and the main characters.

Set during, amongst other wars, the "Belgian" and Dutch war for independence from Spain, the movie features the Dutch as the bad guys. They're rather stereotypical, but the Siege of Breda scenes were nicely done. The Dutch speak Dutch, but modern Dutch and without the accent you would expect from the Flemish or the people from the southern provinces in the Netherlands.

The movie does have a surprisingly honest (and still heroic) ending featuring the spectacular Spanish defeat at Rocroi in 1643.
