Seems you have been lucky....pre order usually means pre buy at that moment.  Otherwise, seems it would be more of a reservation system:). For pre orders, I am always billed right away.

I don't feel that it should be such an oddity. Cash on the barrelhead is an old but appropriate expression. I pay for something when I get it. Vendors do not want to extend credit to a customer so why should customers extend credit to vendors?

If that is the case, what is the benefit of pre ordering if the developer only gets your money when they release the product?  Seems like a day one purchase versus a pre order.  Don't get me wrong, would love this process, jus haven't seen myself.

The advantage to a pre-order to the seller is that he is guaranteed a sell at full price. Otherwise he'd oftentimes have to settle for whatever price the purchaser paid, and many digital customers wait for something to be priced at 50% (or more) off before they buy.
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

For game pre-orders, I've always paid up front unless explicitly mentioned on the sale page.  Last couple I pre-ordered at Gamersgate (IIRC) charged then & there.

I'm sure some titles occasionally specify that they won't charge until release, but I've not purchased any like that via digital distribution.  It was that way with brick & mortar store pre-orders of course, long ago in the far far away.

If that is the case, I won't bother with any more pre-orders. I'll just wait until the games I want go on sale and pick them up for 75% off. Why give digital distributors an interest-free loan of my money?

It's the sane way to go.  Wait & see how the release is first.. probably worth spending three or four extra bucks after you know it's not a buggy mess, as opposed to spending 18-to-45 early only to find out you're not as happy with it as you imagined yourself to be.

It can be tough waving off the hype and excitement sometimes, but it's probably better to wait & see.  Being able to play the Beta makes it easier to do since you get some quick satisfaction and, primarily, you can already read up on what kind of condition it's in.

A number of the developers are now providing beta/alpha access to the games if you pre-order....that is a big attraction for me if I know I will buy the game anyway.  Also, some come with pre-order bonus that some people like.  However, if your OK waiting, then I agree with you that eventually the game will be on sale at some point.  I just have no will power:)

Except in this case they are offering a second game free when you order.  Not you, but what's to stop someone from ordering MotBW, getting the free copy of Genesis, and then just canceling.

FarAway Sooner

I'm not generally a fan of pre-ordering.  But, in the case of Eador, I feel like Genesis alone would be worth a $20 price point for me.  On the principle of that matter, and all the surplus value that Snowbird games has already given me, I'm willing to pre-order Genesis as a gesture of good will.

If MotBW lives up to its potential, all the better.  Either way, I've supported a small indie developer shop that's already turned out one very sharp title in a niche genre that I love.  These days, I have more money than gaming time in any event...  (not enough of either mind you, just A LOT less time to game!)
