Double Deuce

Anyone still playing them? I'm thinking about taking up the design torch this summer and work on another campaign. I would like to do something from the Soviet side, Cold War.

This weekend I downloaded the latest updates that were recently released. Haven't installed the 1.0 games yet. Every time I get the urge to play something from the past, I try it and remember why I quit.

GJK

I've installed and loaded up the free version and quickly dismissed it.  However, I hear great things about the game, especially being an ASL player.  Am I just not giving it a fair shot?  I mean I've only moved a few units and maybe did a couple of rounds of combat, if that.  I can get past the 90's graphics, so what am I missing?

I still play WinSPMBT but not as actively as before.
Problem with the game is that I find it a bit clunky.  Turns take quite long to resolve so I had to lower level of detail and messages.  All of this of course is because I compare this with modern games.

Please can someone re-make these :)

Not going to happen.

The code was released publicly with the explicit caveat that no one could sell the engine.

That's why you see campaign packs being made by Matrix and Shrapnel - they must give the game engine away but to pay for updates they have to sell content. If you want to see these games supported you'll want to buy their packages.

Maybe some day someone will remake them from the ground up, but think about it - all the research that went into getting all those stats. Back in the day Gary Grigsby did this out of his house and did all the research, coding and graphics by himself. Sales of wargames were mostly mainstream because no one else was really coding much in the way of games.

These days I doubt they'd sell the units to pay for three guys to do some serious coding and updating of the graphics. The best you'll find is going to be Combat Mission.

+1 to what LB said.

Don and Andy (Camo Workshop) pretty much do this as a labor of love and their profit is extremely limited, probably even less so after Shrapnel gets their cut. I believe that they are both retired from regular jobs now because their patches have become more frequent, almost every year now and they seem to include many more "features" rather than just being typical fix/patches.

For me, I got burned out doing design work. Like any game, you get tired of looking at the same screen and playtesting the same scenario's over and over trying to tweak them. From just focusing on design stuff all the time, my actual play got so bad I was repeatedly getting my butt handed to me by complete noobs so I took and extended break.  8)

+1.

I play it single player and I know Sauron :) still plays it MP too. I haven't played it for quite a while, but recently there was a massive overhaul patch. So I reinstalled partly to play it again, as it's still a great game, and partly because Sauron asked me if I'd get an MP game on with him.

Like Jomni, I can't help making comparison with modern games like Combat Mission x2, Men of War etc.

That all said the Camo Workshop have brought this game back to life and have kept it interesting, pretty much as a gift to the gaming community, which deserves support and appreciation.  :)

I installed WinSPMBT today from the CD. Then went to do the 6.0 update and see a warning not to install to Program Files. Short story had to uninstall and reinstall with a new path. Then 6.0 and 7.0 and try the game. Have to run as admin to save files and settings. Played for a while and computer shut down. Probably overheat from dust buildup.
