Just been watching the horrific news of the train crash in Spain. So, far, at least 80 dead and 100+ injured. Thoughts and payers to all those involved.

How in the world could that driver have been going double the speed limit?

Cannot speak to this particular train engineer.
My grandad grew up in Colorad
o, and went everywhere on the narrow guage trains in use on the Rockies.  He told a story about an engineer who did the same thing coming down a grade.  The conductor and brakeman both jumped and were saved, but the engineer rode the train to the end.
They found him before he died and asked what the hell he was thinking.
Supposedly he said, I was sure I could stop her.
