Even though the killing will make Putin look bad, him being the obvious suspect, he may have felt he had no choice if this Nemtsov guy actually had the evidence he said he did of Russia's direct role in the Ukraine conflict and was ready to release it very soon.

It also may have been a faction within Putin's regime who had more to lose than just irritating him, or even a criminal element that was itself directly involved with supplying the conflict's rebel side, with unofficial Putin sanction. I'm willing to bet that in the Russia the 'roles' of the Russian Mob, the secret police, the big business sector, and of high gov't officials have overlapped so much that Russia is effectively a Mafia caliphate.

There's a reason so many historical strategy games concentrate on Europe, the Med, and western Asia (including the Middle East). That area is just straight-up the mother of war, and has enough resources of various kinds to make the wars especially dangerous.

We look at the Cold War outcome of WW2, like it's weird for the area to return to "the 30s". But "the 30s" and "the 10s", etc., are nothing more or other than the natural state of society in that 1/8th of the planet since time eonian.

We aren't just going back to the 30s. For all practical purposes, we're going back to the rise of European nation-states per se -- at least as far back as the late 1700s, if not earlier (due to the shift from feudalism previously).
