Just got done playing a solid session of Distant Worlds: Universe as the Wekkarus. (It's a relief to finally be able to get the game's soundtrack to play properly on the copy installed on the XP half of my hard drive!) They probably fit my play style even better than the Quameno.

Next up: Either some Rome II, Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, or Crusader Kings 2. If there's time after that, probably Birth of the Federation or Armada 2526 Supernova.

With the 100 year anniversary of start of WWI fast approaching (next Saturday being the 100th anniversary of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination) I've decided to take a break from my usual fixation of WWII history/gaming with some exploration of the first global conflict.

I started off with some light reading of the first book in Ken Follett's latest trilogy, Fall of Giants. Historical fiction covering the period of the great war and not a bad read. I've just started into Max Hastings Catastrophe: Europe Goes to Mar 1914. An excellent nonfiction treatment of the start of the conflict from my favorite war historian. I strongly suspect it will also grow into a series.

On the gaming front (board & electronic) my collection is sadly lacking when it comes to WW1. I'm tempted by the superb looking WW1 Gold but not certain I'm ready to make that level of commitment just yet. To End All Wars looks very promising and am likely to pick it up if the reviews pan out. I don't like to invest in board games unless I have a reasonable chance of finding an opponent...and really don't have any prospects of that with a WWI title at the moment. So, for the time being I'm making due with my one and only game dedicated to that time period, Steam and Iron: The Great War At Sea. I'm working the graveyard shift this weekend but have packed the laptop along with the hope of some peace and quite during the wee hours of my shift...for blowing up dreadnaughts and such.

Fine gaming weekend

- designed a scenario in ARMA III for assaulting a village and had great fun
- carried on with designing a map for CMBS based around donetsk railway station
- Epic moments in CKII Parma
- Mafia II loving it

I try ucg. Now, do I use my new found Iberian riches to move immediately against Rome with what is a pretty decent Punic war machine, or do I consolidate North Afriica first, make some better money, build a magnificent Punic war machine and then take Rome?

For the last half hour I was playing alongside MiniGus 2 and she was really into the game too. She wants to start playing, only after she confirmed that Rome 2 was "not just for boys." Sunrise, sunset...:)

I've played a lot of different games this weekend, but of note is that I've started investing some time trying to learn Graviteam Tactics finally. The UI is a bit confounding...not so much big picture, but different keys for every station...it's not intuitive at all (to me).

Definitely. If you have seen any decent tutorial videos, please let me know. I'm open for tips...I can barely figure out what I'm doing.

I also spent some time with Combat Mission: Battles for Normandy and Shock Force. What a great game. I don't know why I don't play the CM games more...they are so much damn fun.

First weekend following the end of my first year teaching and I went crazy with gaming in and amongst the World Cup games. It has been along time since I was able to get this kind of gaming in.

Lets see I played, League of Legends, Mount and Blade, CivV, Unity of Command, Brothers in Arms and Sleeping Dogs.

After being out of town Friday with the wife, I came back and managed a "Total Victory" in CMBN's Kampgruppe Engel campaign's 5th battle against the always very tough Canadians. I now have a new "Most- Hated Weapon" for this game, the PIAT. With Honorable Mention going to the Vickers and Bren machine guns. Booooo... >:(
