Kudos to the Russian pilot for averting what could have been a disaster.  Looks like the Argentinian pilot was paying more attention to the World Cup than to his plane/passengers  :(

that looks more like tower error then pilot error.  planes can only go where directed on the ground right?

When that russian pilot slammed the throttles forward he must have had images of catastrophic engine failure...

... until he remembered- "ah, not Kusnetsov but Pratt & Whitney... :)".

...true, assuming neither the pilot/co-pilot or tower made a mistake  :)

I imagine it's still expected that the pilot or copilot looks out the effing windows in the direction of any potential approaching traffic when crossing a runway in operation, you know, 'just in case'?

Regardless of what the root cause for this near miss was I agree, kudos to the pilot who aborted the landing and circled around for another try.


I guess the guy in the watchtower picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue.

I cannot recall ever having my plane go out onto the runway directly. It has always been go out to the end approach then wait for clearance. Then the pilot takes it around the corner. Then a short stop. Then he guns it for takeoff. The guy is behaving like a taxi driver.

While this was certainly an error its not that pilots are just marrionets of ATC.
The end responsibility is always with the captain of a aircraft.

Assuming here that the aircraft going around did not already report this of doing so prior to the other one lining up on the runway (we have no audio of Comms), the guys in the lining up aircraft should indeed have looked out the effing window before moving onto the runway.
Then they should have queried ATC.

ATC seems to have made a grave error on their turn.

As for the aircraft going around; that's a normal procedure every pilot is well trained for and not considered a non-normal situation in terms of gravity of situation.
I suspect the angle of the camera might make the aircraft appear much closer to the other one than it actually was .

Still it doesn't change the fact this was an undesireable situation any way you look at it. Good decisive action of at least one crew made the day.

BTW I always hate it when report talk about 'the pilot'. Modern airline Operations are conducted in a multi-pilot environment as a 'crew'.
