Losing what little hope I had for a June July release.

http://www.steelbeasts.com/topic/10539-sb-pro-pe-40-hardware-recommendations/

A few pages down its stated that at best it will be first week in August, but its looking very probable it will be December.  Now the real question seems to be "What year?"

Even scarier is the dire discussion on performance on what I consider mid- to high-end machines.

Ssnake

Well, at the moment the question of a release hinges on getting a few critical bugs fixed that we found only recently. That makes the whole release date question difficult to answer.

As far as the performance is concerned, I'm not happy about it either. On the other hand, you only reported half of what I wrote. The other half of the news is that on less potent machines - like a 2.9 GHz i5 mobile processor with integrated graphics HD4600 - it is quite possible to get the same frame rates (although at lower quality settings). This indicates that by and large the performance is CPU limited, a trend that has been observed with version 3.0 already, just less prominent.

In any case, we'll continue working on it. If someone would rather want to wait another six month before considering a purchase, I would understand that. At the same time, given the overall slower pace of Steel Beasts missions, I think that 30...35 frames per second still feel "OK-ish". And it IS quite possible to boost the frame rates up into the 50s in scenarios that restrict the visibility. Our benchmark test was designed to create a challenge. It's not one that only picks favorable conditions to paint the performance in a better light than what would be experienced later. So, if you DO play with scenarios involving rainfall and snow and a visual render range of 3,000m (which is entirely realistic for European autumn weather) you can expect to get a good frame rate. So, it's not all doom and gloom.

RyanE

You'll nnote I put the entire thread in the link.  It might also be easier if info wasn't scattered across multiple threads and buried sporadically in 70 page threads.

Team Iron Campaign Phase VI by Cougar11

This scenario is a simulation and does not have any political message.

Mission Summary :
The IRIA has attacked into Iraq crossing and taking the city of Basra and Faw. They have seized the ports and supply routes into Iraq. Kuwait and Iraq have asked for assistance. Nato and US command have determined that for national security interests, regional allies, international supply, and open hostilities, that your force 3rd Brigade ABCT Team Iron of the 4th infantry Division will spearhead US and NATO forces. Brigade objective is to penetrate, and destroy as many forces of the front line of the IRIA 92nd Armored Division(+), push into the Division rear area, and force the 92nd to retreat out of Iraq, and away from the border. Brigade strength must be maintained at 40% of combat forces at all times, and if it drops below we will be forced to fall back to Iraq boundaries. Minimum success is to make the IRIA to return to Iranian boundaries. Moderate success is to push into Iran defeating the second line of forces, and reducing the 92nd to below 70% strength. Major success is to reduce enemy forces to 50% or less in the 92nd, and push into or beyond the third line of forces. Your brigade will be flanked to the North by 1st and 2nd brigade to keep any major flanking maneuvers from threatening that flank. Your forces will have responsibility of your Southern and Southeastern flank. You are required to "designate a force to secure that flank prior to missions, and cannot be from the previous mission. Terrain around Basra is mostly flat and sandy. The further east you travel, the more hills, and mountains you will run into. As you go, there will be increasingly more narrow avenues of approach, limiting your attack options, and allowing the enemy to better engage you.

3rd Brigade 4th Infantry Division has pressed an additional 8KM into the Iranian's 72nd Armored Division area. The brigade has suffered heavy losses to take this terrain. Team Iron has seized three major objectives, the area radar installation, a large population center, and the area airfield. These are vital, in securing the skies for our aircraft. The brigade must push on. The brigade will continue its offensive. Intel suggests that things will only become more difficult. Intel shows elements of the 1-71-72 Armor, 2-1-72 Mechanized, and 3-1-72 Mechanized moving into the area. The arrival of these forces will bring a new dynamic to the operations, and complicate them at the same time. Be prepared for open country, and urban fighting. Commanders prepare for phase 6 of this campaign. Study your graphics, objectives, and briefings. Bring me your force requirements when ready.

Map

Excerpts of the battalion commander's (HAVOC 6) orders for...BLUEFOR (D.O.W.)

1) SITUATION:

a) Enemy:
Elements of 3 Iranian Brigades 2-1, 3-1, and 1-71. Their forces will consist of better forces, and have a mix of Russian and NATO vehicles. They are very mobile, have secured most if not all population areas, resources, and road intersections. Most of their forces have mobilized from another area, so expect upto 2 battalions in the area. They continue to have indirect support, High Numbers of ADA, and possible rotary wing support.

b) Own:
              Units set East of PL.

c) Attachments and detachments: Per Player CO.

2) MISSION:

Phase 6 will consist of securing the Refinery and Objective Fox by Echo and Fox Companies. Setup a defensive screen to the West, and provide a safe area for units to move into, and secure the objective H+ 30:00. Additional objective provided by local commander based on unit ability, and approval from higher HQ.

3) EXECUTION:

Company Attack

Intent: Will be revised once bluefor commander has decided on course of action.

Still torn if I will buy this version until all pieces are available...likely will wait for some feedback first.

Will be paying attention too.  Because my sim streak will inevitably come back around.

I'd say save your money then.

There's not much in 4.0 that interests me, and I play the game frequently. A few improvements for dismounts, is really all that spikes my interest in seeing SB expand from the one-trick-pony, crewman simulator, to something that resembles combined arms combat. Currently, the game handles dismounted combat particularly poorly - impossible to be considered a ground combat simulator game when infantry hardly function.

I do enjoy multiplayer events, so I will be upgrading to 4.0 on release, hopefully this week. .

Additionally, I think the terrain system that has been promised for a later 2016 release will fall victim to the same result that the particle system fell victim to, when 3.0 was released - aka - we didnt get it.
