I read on a sims 3 message board that the free sims 2 ultimate version contains SecuROM. Didnt this program cause problems for folks in the past? Maybe this is the culprit causing your problems?

You're probably thinking of the old SecuROM disk check DRM that caused issues.  Since this is a download (?), it's probably the Online Activation version of SecuROM which is something else.
