What's on your table right now?

Fighting Formations is a pretty elegant tactical system (though a bit heavy on the dice tossing -- every exchange of fire has one attack roll, plus one defense roll for each defending unit, plus possible return fire, which has its own attack and defense rolls). But it's pretty fun. I'm not sure if I'm any good at it... but that's another question...

I think one of my biggest complaints about the game is that there aren't too many scenarios, and about half of them are very large, and so don't get played much. This is the first time I've played through this particular one, which is one of the larger of the "small" scenarios.

I replaced the kids with employees. Kids may have been easier.

I had to abandon my Fighting Formations game from last night, because VASSAL started acting weird and auto-rotating pieces whenever I moved them... which was really frustrating. So I started up a game of Panzergruppe Guderian instead.

This is a game that I think really holds up gameplay-wise and, despite its era, has relatively clear rules.

Vassal? Odd if it's acting weird.  :o

Yeah, I've never seen anything like that happen before. I tried saving/reloading, re-starting the whole program, and even rebooting the computer, but nothing worked -- but ONLY for that particular save. If I started up another instance of the same scenario, it worked fine.

A pair of my nephews are looking for a game lasting around a couple hours tomorrow.

Had originally thought it could be a good time to finally break out Shogun, but that would probably take longer since it'd be the first time I've played.

So Kemet is looking very ideal for a fairly quick game of mythical conflict.  Unpacking that on the table and studying the rules again tonight.

Was tempted to try something a bit unusual this time around with Tales of the Arabian Nights.  I'm sure they'd enjoy it, but the youngest one is usually more of a war & direct conflict type who wants to crush everyone before him, hear the lamentation, etc.   We did some Conquest Of The Empire and Age Of Imperialism last year, and he couldn't get enough of it.  I may have to break down and introduce them to one of my favorite childhood wargames with cool pieces, Ikusa (previously MB's Shogun/Samurai Swords) for the holidays when we'll have longer stretches for the big games.   >:D

There may still be room in the tournament.  If you are interested, I can ask.

Someone has been bad.... which one to start with first.  Should have had Raid on St. Nazaire as well, but some bum out bid me.

And I have Firefly with all the trimmings should be here Wed.... Got these on purchase, sale, and trade.  Doing some shuffling of my inventory.

I currently have Mistfall on the table, with the short beginner scenario.

My opinion hasn't quite formed on it yet.  I'm sure it will take one or two full-size scenarios to get the full effect, so I'm undecided right now.

I do know one thing.. I had hoped for a bit more variety in each custom character deck.  While there is a lot of interplay between the cards in hand & play every turn, each character still plays a very singular way with so many duplicated cards.  The strategy is focused on stacking your draw deck, when resting between fights, as much as the abilities on the cards themselves.  So it's a bit different than I originally expected.  I was probably hoping for card play a bit closer to Sentinels of the Multiverse, but this is something different.

The tile exploration and theme'd encounters was a big draw for me, though, and it's recommended you play a full-size scenario to get the full effect.  The small starter scenario only uses 1/3rd of the monster encounters, and very little exploration tiles.

Resting, and knowing how long you can rest before moving onward, is the main way you manipulate your used cards back into your draw deck for future use.  Extremely important part of the game.

I'd almost recommend just jumping straight into the full-sized scenarios, but there is a lot of card interpretation needed when learning the game.  Mixed with getting the order of all the turn sub-phases down, learning how to estimate the time track, dealing with enemy reinforcements, effective resting, etc, it's difficult to recommend skipping the chopped down beginner scenario, too.  There are some facets that require learning strategies regarding timing.  All probably picked up on faster with the little one.

I do highly recommend that you d/l and print off (or keep on a tablet nearby) the 1-page Gameplay/Turn order summary/Errata doc a user put up on BGG:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/121430/mistfall-round-summary-tips-1-page

It saved a lot of page flipping and manual digging for me.  The turn summary in the rulebook was pretty satisfactory & detailed IMO, but rather unwieldy.  I prefer it in a 2-sided page cardstock form.

No, no, that's ok.  I typed up that rulebook for print for him but I haven't actually even read it yet.  :)  I do have a copy of it that Paul sent me, I just need to set it up solitaire some time and become acquainted with it.
