I think that's the key to surviving very long - sensing a bad situation before it happens.

This is sage advice. No question I've had careers come to an ignominious end because I pushed a situation or advantage longer than I should've.  One thing I've come to hate is when my 'Kette' (I've mostly restricted myself to Albatros campaigns thus far) decides to pursue an enemy deep behind enemy lines, and I'm just thinking, "C'mon guys, time to turn around and RTB, don't you think??"

That's a good indication of how convincing WOFF is, in a way -- I genuinely start to get anxious when I'm forced to loiter or patrol in dangerous skies.

LOL!  Same here.  Or thinking that your flight leader should engage that group that's trying to get around behind us.  Did he even see them?!  "Look over there you bastard!"

I'm impressed, btw, that your best career was flying the Camel, Nefaro.  Not an easy crate to fly...

Once you get used to it, you can tear some shit up.   >:D

In my experience with WOFF, I think the Nieuport 17/23/24s are some of the toughest to fly, followed by the Fokker Dr.I.  They have some nasty structural limits that I often pass when in a tight dogfight, snapping wings off from the Gs.  I can usually judge how far I can push it with other aircraft by the creaking sounds of the airframe but it's difficult to get a similarly good gauge by the sounds of these as it can happen so much more quickly there isn't much warning.

You guys need to man up and join us in trying to survive in the campaigns of WOFF!

Nefaro

Hah!  Survive?!   ;D

I'll definitely join the attempts at survival when I'm back into it.

I enjoy reading the aar's from the vets doing the Rick Rawlings challenges like you, Slick.  But those are played with 'full real' settings, right?  I'd last 2-3 missions max in WOFF without crutches like plane labels, HUD, Tac display, etc.

Well, most of this Friday so far has been spent not working on my hinted AAR project but rather about 4 hours and counting downloading files (and internal updates, and high def graphics) for Lord of the Rings Online.  >:(

After thinking about it today at work (and reading some other threads), it seemed like a good (and generally free) way to celebrate October with an atmospheric game I hadn't played before. With 67% of the remaining 22% of the updates still remaining (maybe), I'm wondering if I made the right choice; I doubt I'll learn so tonight.  :P

I don't generally care for MMOs but I did play LOTRO for a few months and found it generally enjoyable in the early stages when you could solo things.  Once I got to a high enough level that I had to start teaming up with others, I didn't enjoy it as much.  I just don't see the point of repeatedly running the same instanced dungeon over and over and over and over again but that seems to be the thing most players enjoy.

BanzaiCat

Played some Warlock with new DLC tonight.

Want to do some solo Fire on the Lake this weekend to wrap up my review of it.

Will be trying out Democracy 3 at least, possibly HOI III also. Maybe even Secret of Monkey Island. Sometimes I go through my Steam list and see games and think "Huh, I bought that?"

Toonces

Once Elite: Dangerous gets done updating I'll be playing some of that.

@ JP: You might want to try downloading and playing a mod for Amnesia if you are looking for something scary.  There are quite a few good looking ones out there if you do a Google search.

Toonces, not looking for something scary so much as atmospheric. The past few years Lords of Shadow was one of my go-to games, but I recently picked up and completed LoS2, and am not much in the mood to go back to LoS1 so soon. (Partially due to a slightly sour taste on how shallowly the game and maybe the whole franchise ended compared to LoS1, and partially due to some very ill-advised gameplay design choices.)

Oh, good, as of this moment, about 6 hours and 15 minutes after I started, my LOTRO download is complete! I shall hope to say wooot...

SDR,

I suspect you were looking at crews who were grinding hard to open up the main expansions for free, instead of paying $40ish for the first three (or four) in a group and/or another $40ish for the most recent one.

(Worth noting, there seems to be some confusion over how many expansions have actually been released to Steam, with the next-most-recent one apparently missing! -- neither offered separately nor in the group of the first three expansions. Possibly this is because enough TP is normally earned to open up that area for free, so Turbine just doesn't bother selling it on Steam, but I can't tell yet.)

I can't say I'm looking forward overly much to MMOing the game either, per se. But the in-game society apparently requires a significant amount of non-combat exploration and crafting for the economy, and that's something quite different from the normal super-action game. (Though of course there's a lot of that, too.) The epic quest material has been generally praised for its major expansions to the LotR lore as well, and the playable area seems to dwarf (pun intended) any other1st or 3rd person game on the market right now. (Or possibly ever by now.)

LOTRO was my most-played MMO over the years for the amount of time put into it.  Very likely due to being in a nice little mellow guild that was good enough to regularly complete the boss dungeons required to advance at the end of Moria.  I did enjoy some of those smaller ones as they required some serious strategy and teamwork but at a six person level so you still didn't need a huge group for the vast majority.

As with all MMO's, everyone eventually got sick of playing it after a few years and left.   :buck2:  My biggest gripe about it was some of the ridiculously long "FedEx Quests" that had you repeatedly walking/riding back & forth.  The quest series to get your first horse was a perfect example.   ::)  I'd be frothing about halfway through it because I felt whomever created that quest series was intentionally wasting my time.  Luckily they only occasionally happened and you could skip some of the others.

Also.. when the Moria expansion came out, it became pretty awesome.  Not only was Moria pretty cool but being able to customize and "level" your legendary weapons was something I'd never seen done in an MMO before.  It was a bit of a grind to get the level-ups for them but I still enjoyed it.  Quit some time after the next expansion came out (Mirkwood IIRC) so I've not seen the Rohan stuff or anything since.  Maybe I should at least check it out sometime.  If nothing else, there is instant end-game PvP available via your Orc/Warg characters in the PvP zone that could be fun too when you get sick of playing the Freeples or don't want to level them to the cap to go PvP'ing.

Will be playing Sword of the Stars II Enhanced Edition (from the Paradox sales) and also Ports of Call Deluxe 2008 edition which I got from Amazon for an incredible 0.05 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ports-Call-Deluxe-PC-CD/dp/B002WYVAJC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1412428418&sr=8-2&keywords=ports+of+call) ! I have realised I 've a liking for port trading games, after playing Transocean recently.

I like how other games (e.g. Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption) will make such great environments out of a map that's maybe four miles long to scale (which is literally less distance than between my house and the next town over which is the county seat); and LOTRO casually mentions that its new book expansion (not a major one but large enough to have main-story chapter quests) has been placed 100 miles north of the starting zone...  :))

you cant play unless you have this (sorry but your mind is about to explode):

Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.
