Fantastic 4 redux

Well, this version is heavily inspired by the Ultimate FF -- which is a version despised even by fans of the Ultimate canon.

Moral: if you're going to be unfaithful to the canon, either pick a canon no one likes and make it better, or at least don't be surprised if your crappy changes to a despised canon are reviled even by people in your audience who have no knowledge of the source material.

I don't think Fox is going to be so quick to dump the licence, even with the box office disaster.

They're prepping an X-Men TV show, and clearly they have a long term plan for X-Men on the big screen. Even if we don't see the Fantastic Four as they appeared in Trank's film, I don't know that Fox wants to shelve them when they could potentially use them, even rebooted versions, in their other licences.

Moreover, it's not so much that they own the Four, they own the Four's villians too. That is something that has a LOT of value. Part of the Fantastic Four licence is the ownership of Doom, Namor, Galactus and the Silver Surfer ect. Fox already turned Marvel down when they offered to let them keep Daredevil in return for Galactus and Silver Surfer.

Doom, Galactus and Silver Surfer could be very helpful for Fox in the long run, finding relevant, well known opponents for the X-Men. Surfer could have his own film.

Ok, now I need to go read some football articles and watch a porno to wash the nerd off.

I don't even want to go to the pirate site to watch this for free. 9% on Rotten Tomatoes among critics; 23% among audiences. "Meh" went right to "Meh-jor poopstain."

The good news is that, many years from now, when you do actually see it you'll think "that wasn't sooo bad" because your expectations couldn't be lower!

Fox is going to have to figure something out with Marvel for FF, even if they don't let the rights revert to Marvel. It's hard to imagine Fox could successfully reboot the reboot at this point.

Marvel has a fair amount of leverage. They can pull back support on the comics front and limit other merchandising/marketing. Something I believe they were already doing. It's one of the reasons you don't see much in the way of merchandising for the Fox/Sony films. Marvel/Disney doesn't want to promote a riva'ss movie.

Look at what Marvel has done with it's historically 'B' franchises. It's turned them into billion dollar properties. The companies with the rights to the 'A' franchises have run them into the ground. My kids love Iron Man and the Avengers. They barely know who the Fantastic Four are. They saw this new movie and didn't know what to make of it. They've never seen a really bad movie with Marvel characters (I've kept them away from the some of the X-men and Spiderman movies).

The best chance for a recover for Fox now, in my opinion, is to fold the FF into anyone making decent X-Men properties; and in fact they were already buzzing hard about an X-Men/FF crossover before the roof collapsed on the FF release.

Fox has sent confusing signals about the property in its late development. The signals up until a few months ago were that the movie was in disaster mode, but some of the (non-marketing fluff) signals recently before actual release suggested someone among the purses still saw non-disaster potential for the film.

To be honest, this is exactly what happened with me and the Amazing Spidereboot. Painful the first time I watched it, but not as bad as I was expecting from the buzz. The second time I watched it, I came away actually liking it -- though that might have been in relation to Amazing Spider2. I'm hoping someday I'll get around to appreciating Ama2ing better the same way, even though I watched it in theaters. It generally looks better than Amaz1ng (which wasn't always slouching in that department.) I have a suspicion if I watched it in a French dub, or something like that, without any English subtitles, I'd like it a lot better immediately.

To be equally honest, I realllly liked the movie tie-in game for Amaz1ng, which served as an unofficial sequel to the movie, and that had to have helped my eventual appraisal of the first movie.
