This morning it sprung in my mind that War Thunder might be a good fit, Gus. But I see it has already been mentioned.

But the game is huge. Has a lot of content to unlock and on the easier settings it flies a lot like Crimson Skies. :)

Nah, for a free-to-play it's really quite innocuous in that regard.  It's more of a pay not to grind than anything else.
