The CIA has taken some bad press recently but this time they've made some good headlines. Details are sketchy, as one would imagine in this instance.

QuoteThe CIA thwarted an ambitious plot by Al Qaeda's affiliate in Yemen to destroy a U.S.-bound airliner using a bomb with a sophisticated new design around the one-year anniversary of the killing of Usama bin Laden, The Associated Press has learned.

I know understand Al Qaeda's plan. It isn't to actually pull off these plots... oh no! It is to make increasingly bizarre plots and reveal them, so that our TSA has to look in increasingly uncomfortable places during the security screenings. Now they have justification to feel up our skivvies! Al Qaeda's true plan is to make flying a terrible hassle!

Are you suggesting Greyhound and Amtrak are behind it all?

lol, it all sounds like pants to me :P.. but who is this group of despots, are they called the 'affiliates of Al Qaeda' or do they have a real gang name. Seems the press just try tag anything with Osama's boys, I mean you could call any terrorists affiliates of Al Qaeda.  Al Qaeda does anyone know what that means and did Osamas lads even use that handle.

The great irony here is that the guy who was supposed to make the attack was already on the payroll. I read he was both a Saudi and CIA informant. So this was going nowhere from the start.

It's also encouraging that we've got tentacles that deep into Yemen.

al qaeda apparently translates to "The Base." Yes, osama and his lads used that handle, and likely not accidentally. Osama thought enough about names that he wanted to incorporate "islam" into a new name for his organization to play more fully off the us vs islam idea.

I'm pretty sure "underwear bomber" is completely the press' fault. Just a hunch, but I'm guessing al qaeda is gonna stick with the virgins in paradise pitch over a "your underwear will explode" alternative.

As far as the al qaeda affiliates in yemen, somalia, and iraq -- not only do those groups self identify as al qaeda affiliates, but there is a mountain of intelligence to suggest at least lines of communication if not outright orders flowing from al qaeda the original to al aqaeda in the arabian peninsula, al qaeda in iraq, etc. Including, for example, communications from osama to al qaeda in the arabian peninsula suggesting that the caliphate prolly isn't going to start there as long the us can keep all our drones from crashing in iran.

And while there's an argument to be made that every time a TSAer "gets" to fondle me, the terrorists have won a little, I'd counter that al qaeda's willful McFranchising of terror cell names is highly indicative of what ultimately is far, far more powerful.
