I guess I'm very fortunate here.  Open tables and lots of wargamer's at the main LGS with Sundays being any type of miniatures day.  You're not going to see a monster game being played though since obviously they can't be finished in a day nor left set up there so you'll see more C&C:A/N type stuff but I have played Up Front there a number of times as well as some small-medium sized ASL scenarios.  There's a group of us that meet there regularly (well, them much more so than me) and they've now invaded a new location that used to be only CDG's/Euro's.  They invaded that location because they serve beer.  :)  They convinced the owner that if they pay like a $5 cover, would it be ok to play whatever they like and the owner agreed.  Now the group has grown as many onlookers have begun to sit at the wargamer's tables.  That and I have my local ASL group that meets every month so I am quite fortunate.

I even did a playtest there for my upcoming game series too. So you never know what you will run into in that LGS.

Our niche within a niche may have supply problems with China's largest port recently trying to blow itself apart. I would expect some pretty hefty delays caused by the events of the past couple of days.

Funny you post this, because I just received a couple of emails from Bill Gibbs, of OMEGA Games. He announced three games...Singapore, Barbarossa, and Vengeance.

Here's the pricing he quoted to me:

Singapore's Colonel edition:  $417.69 or 3 payments of $163.80  I will determine the postage this week.  It will not be anything like it is from another country.

Barbarossa's Colonel edition pre-order price today:  $371.28 or 3 payments of $145.60

Vengeance's Colonel edition pre-order price today:  $397.80 or 3 payments of $156.00

Singapore! covers December 1941 through to August 1945, including the Burma, Ceylon, Eastern India, Malaya, Thailand, Netherlands East Indies (excluding New Guinea) and Vichy Indo China (excluding the very far north of Vietnam) utilising 22 maps – 19 of which measure approximately 3 foot by 1 ½ foot.  3 measure slightly less than that – a printing artefact as they are presented in portrait format. The attached PDF map layout shows how the various maps form up.  Total map area is approximately 72 Sq Ft, and from the key you can see how you can split the areas up to provide much more manageable (gaming table or coffee table sized) elements.  This is a unique product dealing with campaigns that have never before been released as games, and have only rarely been covered even partially in other products, and as such we feel that it is an exceptional introduction to the world of TSWW, which without doubt is the world's premier operational gaming experience.

In terms of counters, the game includes 2800 playing and generic counters, representing over 60 division equivalents of troops, about 4000 planes, and some 600 naval vessels that served in the map area during WW2.  With a zone that is roughly 2000 miles on each side, it shows the critical nature of combined arms operations, the huge difficulties faced by both sides in gaining sea control, air superiority and winning in hard fought ground combat in some of the worst terrain fought over during WW2. 

I mean, holy shit. 22 maps, 19 of which are 3' x 1.5'? Total map area of 72 square feet?!? 2800 counters? Dayuum. No wonder it's so expensive.

I can't imagine the detail on those maps. This is only covering Southeast Asia and surrounding areas. That size (one assumes for a full campaign) would be incredibly huge just for a Pacific campaign, let alone a microcosm of it.

Nef there's NO WAY in hell I'mma spend that kind of money on a board game.

The only way I'd ever have it on my table is with a free review copy. And I already asked and his (nice but to the point) reply was not conducive to such an arrangement, I'm afraid.

Well let's all be freaking honest here there are many, many games board and minis that cost that amount of money.  I've got about $300 into ASL and I'm not even close to having just the core sets.  I really, really need them to reprint Yanks!  This guys just puts it out front this game is going to cost you a car payment.  Fantasy Flights Games deceives you with games like Star Wars X-wing, because $15 for a mini doesn't seem too bad until you need 20 of them or the $100 epic ships.  Just saying...

For the right game...say six guys playing and able to replay the game over and over...that might pass.

No I agree with you in terms of learning about the game play, how it works or doesn't, etc...My point is just simply that $300 is not an unheard of amount for a game system.  I suspect that the majority here have invested that much money or more into the game.  I think it's the upfront sticker shock that really gets people.  It's why have haven't jumped at Star Wars Imperial Assault or Twilight Imperium 3 yet.  $100 is just so much, but in reality other games cost routinely $40 to $60 for the base game.  Anyway the money aspect of the hobby is something that often gives me pause when I'm thinking about buying into a game.  Not to mention it better freaking hold my attention and is something that will get table time at some point during my life. :)
