Continues to drize me crazy....now asking me to find the mortar team from the windmill...can't see them for the life of me....just not sure why this is even a mission....who cares about spotting, I want to be attacking and killing things:)

Silent Disapproval Robot

Oh, I thought you'd already finished mission 2.  I'm further ahead than you but stuck on the 2nd wave of T-34s attacking.

[spoiler]

Grab a pair of binocs off one of the dead Russians and head for the NE corner of the hill that the windmill is on (basically straight to the right of the radio on the table outside.)  Look across the road to the north and you'll see a couple of mortars and an ammo truck.  Spot them through the binocs and you'll have completed the task.  If you don't get the task completed message, walk forward a little but and keep trying.)

Thanks...I thought you were referring to the first wave of tanks, didn't know I had more coming:)

Just tried one of the single missions with the airplane...of course I crashed the plane....right after that the game locked up yet again.

To be honest....this one might be heading to the shelf until a few patches are released...just not enjoying myself the least bit.  I know Sniper Elite is not realistic, but that game drew me right in from the start.

I'm 50/50 on it right now.  When it's working, I'm having a blast.  I really enjoyed taking out the Russians at the windmill.   I just hope they can fix the scripting errors and CTD problems.

My initial impressions are that its Arma II in WWII clothing.  This is good and bad.  It has all the quirks of the ARMA II engine, as well as all the things that make it great.  The AI is definitely wonky. But its still overall a fun game.  Haven't had any CTDs or lockups.  On mission 3 of the German campaign.

...for those with CDS / technical problems and have a boxed or gamersgate copy:
Are you aware there is a release patch V1.01 patch out in two versions, one for Download and one for DVD?

*New: Added the big historical castle of Baranow, with interior and rich detail, a perfect place for battles.
*New: Reworked the environment objects for the most missions of German campaign.
*New: Around 20 new multiplayer missions added.
*New: Long distance firing sight added to StuG III tank.
*New: Various new animations of infantry introduced.
*New: Added a new module for the aircraft terrain view.
*New: New system of disarming the mines.

(the steam version was 1.01 from the beginning)

Yup.  I made the mistake of installing the wrong patch earlier today.  Thankfully I had kept the install files from Gamersgate so I wasn't forced to re-download the whole thing again.

Even after applying the patch, I'm still experiencing problems with the 2nd mission in the German campaign. The first time I played it, the 2nd wave of T-34-85s came rumbling down the road but the German PaK gunners and infantry refused to react.  The tanks blitzed right through, parked behind one of the PaK guns, and then everyone just kind of sat and waited.

The second time, the T-34s opened fire, but the German side still didn't react and everyone died.

The third time, both PaK crews were killed and I was ordered to take over one of the guns.  I wasn't able to do anything with it though as I didn't get the option to reload it in the context menu. Then I was killed.

I'll give it another try tomorrow after I get home from work.

Here is the wiki with patch info and a bunch of places to download it.  Make sure to download the ESD version.

Yes, I have downloaded and installed the patch.  Not seeing as many lockups with the patch installed compared to before, but still seeing enough of them in random places.

Generally speaking, I think your right that it is basically the same as ARMA, except in WWII.  But some reason, it is not grabbing me.  Maybe too much of the same thing.  I haven't played ARMA in a long time so maybe this happens in there too, but all the cutscenes/story telling seems to make the game drag out to me.  Get into a vehicle, drive here, etc.  I wish there was a way to skip those things and jump right into the action.  Seems to me the actual action sequences are small and short so far and my team usually takes care of the majority of the work.  Granted, I am still early in the game, so maybe this changes as you get deeper.

I'll still give it a try a little more, but between this pre-order and my recent pre-order for Game of Thrones, I am becoming gun shy in pulling the trigger early based on my initial disappointment....maybe this will help curb my impulse buying:)

Watching these trucks drive on the road is crazy...just started a mission where you have to board a truck and drive for awhile.....all during the trip, the driver of the truck weaves from the left to right side of the road, back and forth and starts and stops a ton of times.  Not very smoothe, especially on a completely open road.

Silent Disapproval Robot

Yeah, the driver AI has always been crap in ArmA.  I usually take over the driving slot myself just to avoid the bumper car ride but it doesn't give you the option in Iron Front.

There's a new beta patch out for the non-steam version but I think I'm going to give Iron Front a rest for a while.

Happily, I am enjoying the new Realism and Classic modes on RO2 a lot.

Hate to say it, my game is heading to the shelf for awhile as well.  Just not personally finding it enjoyable.  It could be just how the campaigns are scripted so maybe when user made missions come out, I'll have a different perspective.  I am sure some people will enjoy it, but just something about it holding me back right now.  I'll try again after a few patches.

JudgeDredd

Chiming in here.

Got to a mission (truck takes you to a T junction at a village that you have to defend), T-24s turn up - initially no-one opens up (or miss terribly) and the T-34s win the day.

Eventually, after a couple of reloads, it seemed to work and the T-34s were destroyed. I go to the windmill, sort some stuff out and then head back...go to my position and wait for the impending assault. Whilst waiting, I hear tanks. Several T-34s (5 or 6) come crashing through the trees to my rear. I have nothing to attack them with, so I sit and wait. They all gather round the T junction of the village, 20 meters away from me....and sit. I'm in full view...and nothing. No-one is attackign anyone. Eventually - it seemed like a company of soviets show up...and...run past me.

Me and my comrades sit and watch the russians walking right past us - right through our position...and more pass by...and more. Eventually I start shooting them...and it's a turkey shoot. Not one of them saw me - even though I was in full view, standing up and shooting from the hip!

If I had a refillable Panzerschreck, I could have won the day on my own.

It's not ready (what a shock). This is only the first real mission in.
