Has anyone tried playing FO4 while using the PipBoy app on their iPad (or equivalent)?  I finally tried it last night.  It's pretty rad -- I like it.

JudgeDredd

I didn't know there was an app. Thanks!  O0

Yeah, it's pretty cool how it syncs to your game in real time. You equip a weapon on the app and it instantly happens in game. Or you click on the map on your ipad to fast travel somewhere and the game responds accordingly. And definitely useful for being able to see the map while retaining your first-person in game view.

Neat gadget   O0

I presume it still pauses the game? I don't want to be getting attacked whilst I'm injecting some Jet in me!

No, it doesn't pause it, which is the beauty of it (although sounds like you may find that a drawback!).  It allows you to handle your PipBoy independently and integrated with what you're doing in game, so that you don't have to constantly pause the action by bringing up your PipBoy in game.

JudgeDredd

Oh no

I need to pause it...switching weapons, injecing Jet or using a Stimpack. It'll be too fast for me otherwise.

Oh well... neat idea.  ^-^

Keep in mind you can still use your in-game PipBoy in conjunction with the app. So if you want to pause for certain situations like switching equipment, just open your PipBoy per normal.

Best of all worlds.  ;)

JudgeDredd

ah - ok. That could still be cool then. Thanks.

Could you add a different companion, then go back and talk to that individual as a regular NPC?

No I haven't tried that yet.  I'll give it a whirl and see what happens.

Ok well my problem was able to resolve itself.  Seems that the character I needed to talk to was stuck due to a pathing issue.  I reloaded the game one more time after I tried to get a companion to follow me other than the said character but that didn't work.  What happened was when I reached the stuck character we were attacked by newly spawned enemies.  Since I could not draw my weapons I hid behind the character while he dispatched the enemies.  Wouldn't you know that as soon as those raiders showed up the stuck character magically found a way out of his stuck state and pursued and killed the raiders.  Once all the enemies were gone he was able to walk to the place I needed to meet up with him to engage in a dialogue.  Once the dialogue was over mission was finished and I was able to draw my weapons again.  Whew!!!   :D

Soooo... anyone else complete the main quest?

I did, and gotta say, it's really kind of sucked all the air out of the game for me. Not sure I have the motivation to keep playing, even though I've explored only 50% of the map and maybe not even that much...

Nothing too spoiler-y below -- will keep it vague --

Anyway, 110 hours in, Level 38 character. Completed the main quest, siding with the Institute. It's a really disappointing ending. The 'ramping up to the climax' endgame quests just involve blowing this s**t out of your rival factions. There's no subtlety to it, nothing really compelling about the drama. And then it just ends, and the game basically says to you, "OK, now go do whatever the hell you want. Nothing really at stake anymore."

Hmmm...

Overall, I've had a very positive experience with FO4, but the ending feels awfully hollow. Yes, I know there's still a lot to do, but because of the way the main quest ends, it's pretty clear that the game just become sandbox exploration. No more overarching narrative that affects the fate of the Commonwealth. Esp. because the ending I chose *forces* you to completely eliminate 2 rival factions -- factions that added interest to the game-world, and now they're just gone....

I kind of feel the same way. Completed it with around 83 hours played, level 37-38, siding with the Brotherhood. Overall I had a great time, much more so then Wasteland 2 or the previous Fallout games.

The final fight inside the Institute was fun but now I'm really finding it hard to get the motivation to continue. I did play for a few hours today doing some of the minuteman quests but I'm left with a "whats the point feeling". I am curious to see how things play out if you join the Institute or with one of the other factions but I think I'm going to wait a bit and do a modded play through in a few months.
PanzersEast: Have to think to myself.... will I play the first one by the Winter Sale?  Probably not, then I should remove Dragonfall
PanzersEast: but that is thinking too logically.... and Steam Sales are about ignoring Logic

22h in the game, level 7 or 8 ...i ignore the main quest and actually explore on the way of a first side quests running in more an more locations to discover and explore  :)

is there a benefit of actually populating "workbech-areas" as a real settlement?
i am able to dump my stuff in any workbench cause i use that 'build-network'-perk (a settler get tasked to walk back and for between a chosen workbench abroad and Sanctuary -but that target settlement can be unpopulated, still works and my construction resources are shared)

does a settlement especially the main settlement (Sanctuary) get attacked and overrun by enemies? (Raiders, Ghouls) and what are the consequences?  is Sanctuary only accessed by the bridge or do attackers came from all sides through the creek too?

i will try the Android F4 App soon too

JudgeDredd

I'm about 24 hours in and level 13. I'm similar to you mikeGER where I wander around discovering some weird settlements and little known areas. I was given the Go to Diamond City task AGES ago and I'm still not there...just wandering about, cleaning up the area really  :2funny:

This is one of the serious drawbacks right now -- the short answer is, "No." There's no real benefit to building up your settlements, or to having multiple settlements (if you use fast travel, and let's face it, we all do).

There's no real benefit to building up defenses or a perimeter. What I've found is, enemies will just spawn randomly *inside* your perimeter, thereby negating all the hard work you did building walls, spotlights, turrets around your settlement.  A truly baffling and infuriating design decision on Bethesda's part... or just sheer laziness.

I think if you're willing to put massive amounts of time into building up settlements, networks, eventually putting shops etc., then settlements might have a pay off. But the amount of time and work that takes -- esp. given just how fiddly and terrible the settlement building UI is, and man does it suck -- it just really doesn't seem worth it to me.

Toward the end of my current game, I just started completely ignoring my settlements -- stopped bothering with upkeep, stopped responding to raider / mutant attacks. (BTW, did you know your settlements are capped at *20* settlers?? Wish I had known that earlier. Why the game gives you the ability to build a settlement with accommodations with way more than that -- like building beds, for instance -- is just beyond me.) I've had entire settlements wiped out, and my genuine feeling was, "who cares?"

So yeah, it's definitely disappointing to find out that you can put *tons* of work into improving / defending settlements, and there's no real payoff in terms of how it affects the game world...
