Con, glad your family is safe.

Pete, keep your head down and your eyes open.  And be safe.

I wish there was some way that Muslims that aren't affiliated with all this terror bullshit could stand up and reckon with their own.  These attacks only play into jihadists hands.  Spreading hate and mistrust of Muslims among the population.  That, in turn, will help to radicalize more Muslims.  It's what Daesh wants.

Some bad news to wake up to.

My wife and kids left Brussels on Sunday so luckily they are out of this madness.  My sister and her family who they were visiting in Brussels are safe (but they live in a nieghborhood where there is a huge Muslim population)  They are sheltering in their home right now.  My brother in law works for the European Union.  Two years ago they were in the Ukraine when Russia invaded and now Brussels.  I need to ask them where they are going next since they seem to pick their new assignments and then it all goes to hell there.

Con

Very glad to hear all your loved ones are safe, Con.
+1 Amen to that. O0
The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings, and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own. Aldous Huxley

Foul Temptress! (Mirth replying to Gus) ;)

On a good day, our legislature has the prestige of a drunk urinating on a wall at 4am and getting most of it on his shoe. On a good day  ::) Steelgrave

It's kind of silly to investigate whether or not a Clinton is lying. That's sort of like investigating why the sky is blue. Banzai_Cat

This is the issue: The Sufi's are not your problem but the Salafi's and Wahabi's following the "inspiration" of Sayyid Qutb and similar "scholars". Time to cut out the cancer of Salafism, and Wahabism before it spreads to the rest of the body politic.

The irony is that Salafism - a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam - is far closer to the "religion" of Mohammed, and is inspired by the lives of his immediate successors like Abu Bakr, and Khalid ibn Walid. Their manner of carrying out the Ridda wars, and beyond is textbook IS behaviour. Conversely, the Sufi's who developed after this are often seen as Bid'aa (innovation=heresy), so are criticised as not being really muslims in the eyes of the salafist's and wahabi's. It's all a bit similar to the toxic political and religious bigotry of 16th-17th Century Europe.

So, you encourage Sufi's to take leadership in Islam to represent the "mainstream" of Muslims who can live comfortably with the rest of the non-Islamic world, and isolate the Salafist's and Wahabi's on their lack of morality (in modern day terms). Over time you do everything you can to show that the Sufi version of Islam is actually a religion of peace, rather than the Salafi/Wahabi version based on oppression and religious supremacy over all other beliefs. This is a far better option that one that tars all Muslims with the same brush, since the alternative for them is horrific if the rest of the world feel so threatened by Islamist terror that people conclude that Islam has to be eliminated to protect society. It is important to provide people with an alternative that makes sense, and gives value to the religion, rather than lump all followers into a supremacist death cult, which ultimately has to be faced up to in the interest of self preservation.

When I saw French President Hollande offering his condolences to the Belgians I thought what a hypocrite...

He has had a policeman, Sebastien Jallamion, fined, suspended (for two years), and imprisoned for criticising the head of the Islamic State after the beheading of another French civilian. The charges were dressed up as race hate for criticising an Imam, whereas what he was doing was criticising IS policies. Wake up Hollande! >:(
