Sir Slash

The Russians are probably just trying to fight Global Warming by avoiding polluting the upper atmosphere. By flying..... REAL LOW. Or maybe they want to check-out our new Sailorettes uniforms. Could be.

Too bad they didn't cut loose with the Phalanx.
+1

Hard to argue that the US was acting "offensively" with the Phalanx, but in "self defence". After all the plane could have easily crashed into the ship, and the captain's has a duty to act in preservation of his ship and crew.

Those actions by the Su-24s are not spontaneous or unauthorized but have to be orders from on high. No matter how provocative the actions of the pilots, losing one or two planes would be worth it for Putin when he gets done milking it for political points both internationally and (especially) at home. Shoot them down or don't shoot them down, either way Putin wins.

Of course you are right that it is a win-win for Putin. Shooting them down with a phalanx is a lesser win-win for Putin as it demonstrates that there is a line that you cross at your peril, and that he has pushed too hard. It's better still if the pilot ejects and is rescued, as the point is made on a very expensive aircraft without killing someone who probably doesn't have much choice regarding his actions. Either way, I expect the aggressive practice would soon stop if it got a robust response... and film everything to counter any propaganda claims.

And now they've barrel-rolled dangerously close to a RC-135.

Last I checked the Black Sea isn't a Russian only body of water.  In fact, three NATO countries have ports on the Black Sea.

QuoteThe Russian Foreign ministry said Moscow would respond to a U.S. naval ship's entry into the Black Sea with unspecified measures, saying it and other deployments were designed to ratchet up tensions ahead of a NATO summit, the RIA news agency reported.

Russian state media reported that the USS Porter, a U.S. naval destroyer, entered the Black Sea a few days ago on a routine deployment, a move it said raised hackles in Moscow because it had recently been fitted with a new missile system.

U.S. Navy officials told reporters on Wednesday the U.S. military would also have two aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean this month ahead of a July NATO summit in Warsaw as Washington sought to balance Russian military activities.

"Of course, this does not meet with our approval and will undoubtedly lead to response measures," RIA cited Andrei Kelin, a senior Foreign Ministry official, as saying about the USS Porter's movements.

He also said the deployment of U.S. aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean was a show of force which in his view deepened a chill in ties between Moscow and Washington caused by Russia's actions in Ukraine and Syria.

"As regards the overall situation of course there is a definite increase and stoking of tensions in our relations," he was quoted as saying.
