Yes, that's something I always thought very cool about him. You would have to really want to get those stories out and on to paper to spend time writing after working a job like that full time!

"Streamlining" used to be for multi-platform games that had to cope with the limitations of consoles, but it has been mainstream for a while now and I'm not a fan of the concept. The limited railroading in Baldur's Gate 2 was acceptable, it served a purpose, but after that things quickly went downhill in the genre with most of the popular RPG's also being released for consoles.

A multitude of customization options, most of which do very little, isn't my cup of tea either, but some customization and at least being able to pick a true class appeals to me. That's what I like about D&D-based games, at least the pre-4.0 editions. It's not very complicated, but provides enough options to make each character different.

When I get a new PC, I'll have to give Pillars of Eternity another go. I tried it, but it felt stale compared to Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. Even a game with a small number of areas like Temple of Elemental Evil had a more convincing landscape.
