You should absolutely buy it! 

The game is more than moving men and machinery around, you have to also manage your relations with officers below and above you.

Piss off the guy in charge of trains?  Your siege artillery gets delayed in relocating.  The guy in charge of trucks love you?  You're units stay better supplied.  Piss of Hitler?  Now your decisions cost more points.  Those are just a few of the multiple relationships you have to be aware of. 

Another point worth mentioning is the excellent manual and in game tutorials.  The documentation in the manual and within the game put other games to shame.  The in game help features narration and video examples on what to do, and the manual goes into great depth.

Should note that those role-playing upper-middle-management elements are largely lacking on the Soviet side, which has its own political fun to compensate. (Where 'fun' = 'Oh God why are my divisions not moving whhhyyyyyy!') (This is for perfectly legitimate game reasons, btw, and I'm not being sarcastic.)

I should probably also add that the game developer uses some key parts of Suvorov's Icebreaker thesis to explain what's going on with the Soviets and why.

I was interested enough to go looking for more data, and put together this compilation video of two lectures Suvorov made (one for the US Naval Academy) while promoting the English release of "Chief Culprit" in 2009.

(The main compilation lasts about an hour, after the 4:40 minute prologue which actually came as part of the Q&A session for one of the lectures, so you can skip ahead to that without problems. The Q/A session takes up the rest of the video, including some biographical things.)

I haven't given it nearly the amount of love it deserves (of course I can say that about many many games ) but it is most definitely worth it. I would also spring for the boxed copy with the Uber sexy hardcover book.

I got that, but really I wish I hadn't bothered -- the hardcover book looks pretty but doesn't add functionality. It just stands next to my gaming chair, glaring at me!

A disappointing surprise.  The Matrix stuff on Steam is no longer on sale even though the Matrix sale is ongoing through December on their site.  I have CMANO on Steam.  If I get the expansion Shifting Sands on the Matrix site can I also get a Steam product code along with it?  Thanks.

Rayfer, that totally depends on whether "Shifting Sands" is also available at Steam. If it is, then yes you can get a Steam code for it after buying at Matrix. If not, you can't yet but when-if-ever they make it available on Steam you can register for a Steam code at that time.

(I've done this before two or three times when buying a Matrix/Slitherine game not yet available on Steam, and then activating it on Steam later.)

In this case, I just checked and Shifting Sands is indeed available at Steam, so you should be able to apply for a Steam code after purchasing at Matrix.  O0
