In general or specific to my game?  In general you have the same choice as you do when picking a candidate to play.  In my game, as noted, I picked Condi Rice.  I don't remember who the A.I. picked.

The only effect the VP has is to raise awareness in the state in which it sits and the surrounding states.  Other stats are irrelevant, afaict.

I'm quite possibly wrong, but it seemed like when I picked my VP that I got a bit of a boost on their issues over the nation.

Then again, it could've just been the TV ads I had out for a couple of the same ones which really started kicking in.  The changes are so small that you don't often get a good picture (and there is randomization to all the poll numbers too).

One of the Stardock guys on the forum said that the candidates from the 2008 version should still be fully compatible with the new one and evidentally there's a fan database with downloadable candidates for us to get here:

You can also upload your custom ones, too, evidentally.  Some people look to have been getting some historical ones in there.

Looks like the older 2008 version had a lot more features and lotsa historical candidates you could play and/or unlock.  Sounds interesting... too bad they didn't just add this year's additions on top of that because the newest one is basically an update of the old one with the extra features pulled out and bugs thrown in.  :-\
