I was playing Torchlight just prior to D3 being released and I did enjoy the game.  I still prefer Fate, but that is another topic.  Anyway there are some interesting things that they are doing as far as classes and skills.  The concern I have is that they seem to be following the D3 model of 4 acts that are played through one time and then availible to play through a second time at higher difficulty.  The acts and dungeons from my understanding stay basically the same maybe there is a small dungeon seed to semi-randomize the dungeons.  I have to say that this format of hack and slash kind of grinds my gears.  Torchlight like Diablo and Fate used random dungeons with a large pool of quests and bosses that would seed at the start of the game.  So no two games were ever the same.  That is what makes a great dungeon crawling hack and slash game.  I don't understand why devs seem to think a non-randomized dungeon, monster, loot game is better than a completely randomized one.  The point that the devs use is that its easier to synch multiplayer.  OK.  Great.  However most players, I'd venture to say 90% play solo and only venture into multiplayer occassionally unless you are forced to like D3 (which is annoying but that too is another topic).

I'll pick it up as its only $20.  However I really hope they consider a random dungeon DLC or expansion

Anyone else looking at getting Torchlight 2?

not until it hits consoles. twitch games on PC make my carpal tunnel flare up. :(

Open World - We're not only in the town of Torchlight anymore! Explore vast overland areas and multiple hub towns, fight through rain, snow, day and night. Our level randomization ensures new layouts, paths, loot, and monsters every time you play.
New Game Plus - In New Game Plus, the game's not over until you say it is. Once you've beaten Torchlight II's primary campaign, you can start again with the same character for a significantly greater challenge. You'll keep all of the skills, gold, and gear you worked so hard for!

looks like there is still random dungeons and a new mode called new game plus. and the dungeons are probably random in that mode as well, just the same story.

Bison

It sounds exactly like D3.  The game+ is the same game only level is 51-99.

I'd say the opposite.
Randomized stuff is crap.
I like to know I'm exploring a real world, with real and sensible items and people.
Not just completely randomly placed dungeon rooms with monsters and weapons with random ability boni.

If only more cRPGs would provide consistent "l00t", get rid of dungeons completely and actually present you with a sensible plausible world, I'd be very happy.

Naa.  The only thing randomized about the layouts in D3 is just a few nodes on each outdoor map and it randomly chooses one of those dungeons as the 'extra' non-main quest one that go-round.  The dungeon & cave layouts are very similar with only a few corridors different.

From what I understand Torchlight 2 still uses the same randomized layouts as in the original (of the dungeons, at least) and from reading one of their recent blogs about the release delays they've been having, it's partly due to finishing up some of the new random sections they've added.

My only question is if each Torch2 dungeon you go into is only two or three levels, as in Diablo 3.  I sure hope they have big randomized dungeons and not D3's tiny ones with little randomization.  While I think the Diablo setting & graphic style is far far better than Tl2's basic childish-looking stuff, Diablo 3 primarily falls on it's ass because it's so damn short - in campaign and size.  It's far easier to get replayability out of a well-randomized hack & slash, with lots of territory to wade through, rather than such a short stint meant to be replayed over & over & over.

I wouldn't be surprised if the old Torchlight fans requested such a higher difficulty mode in the sequel, so they could play their characters longer.  Let's just hope the first play through doesn't take less than 15 hours to finish like D3 did.  ::)   The Torchlight devs stated that they're implementing suggestions from their open beta so they extended the dev period to do so, too.  That can't be a bad sign, right?

I've already purchased the Beta. Its supposed to be released sometime this summer. Originally, they would not set a firm release date because they wanted some distance between the release of their game and the Diablo III hoopla. Now I've read the game is being delayed because the developers are reworking the skill system.

I just saw today that GOG.com had a small listing of Torchlight mods and one looked interesting:

I think I'll try it tonight.

Lastly, why do you prefer Fate over Torchlight? To me they are basically the same game with Torchlight having the better graphics while Fate has a larger Town.

I've pre-ordered it and got Torchlight 1 (via Steam).
Where'd you get your copy that you got beta-access? (I was under the impression it's closed beta, and no "pre-order to beta test" program existed)

Bison

There's no real reason beyond I prefer the fantasy setting to a steampunkesque one.

meadbelly

I'll most certainly buy Torchlight 2 at $20, as it Torchlight 1 remains one of the best values I've gotten in games.

But I'm totally with Tpek in randomness suxxoring. I don't want to get the Magic Hammer of Superior Coiffuring by random chance. That's no fun. I want to slay Big Bad Bob Botswana to earn the Magic Hammer of Superior Coiffuring.

Bison

I don't like boss linked loot in a random hack and slash game.  The game then becomes about only boss fights and not the thrill of getting loot drops from any monster or chest or barrel that maybe uber.

I'm sorry if my post was misleading. I preordered, like you, when it was still in beta but I was not in the beta. It was indeed a closed beta.

Off subject has anyone signed up for the beta of the new Ultiima MMO "Ultima Forever" by Bioware? I did and I don't know why since I don't play MMOs.
Its a open beta and here is the link in case anyone wants to try it:

Thanks for the info.

But now that I look at it..  "EA"  ... "Cross-platform".. and there are only two classes/paths?!  Are you sure it's an MMO?  It only says action rpg on that page.

Sounds like a freetop game (maybe even browser game) unfortunately.  And with the cartoon graphics again.  :-\

Yeah I saw that.

Evidentally they had a short weekend open beta or something, and that's where all the suggestions for improvements came from that they're currently working on.
