WoW is a fucking blight on the market, and a lot of MMORPGs would have done a lot better if it wasn't for people's addictions to that bloody game.  It's not even a very good game in my opinion, and certainly shows its age; a lot of more recent MMORPGs do everything a hundred times better than WoW ever did (like Rift, ha).  But the market will only accommodate so many players, and most of them cling stubbornly to WoW.  Like it or not, it has surely held the genre back.

Tpek

Well, be happy then that WoW is dying, especially after the controversial expanion pack, Battle for Azeroth, and the devs starting to add the terrible Level-Scaling feature that way too many MMOs are using these days to ruin any sort of fun or progress in their games.

Huw the Poo

Oh, good - but I'll believe it when I see it.  If people didn't leave it for much better games, they won't leave it because of an unwelcome feature or two either.  It may lose some players but what happens in the long run remains to be seen.

TBH, a lot of MMORPGs seem to be dying these days. Even WoW is suffering and trying the same gimmick Rift tried (and LOTRO too), a "Classic Vanilla Server" to appeal to the players' sense of nostalgia.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 'classic' server hasn't gone live yet, has it?  I enjoyed WoW many years ago when it was first released, then tried it again last year just to see how it was...it was awful,  a shell of what it once was, at least in my humble opinion.

Tpek

I don't know if WoW Classic is already live, I've stopped caring about WoW some time ago.

Rift Prime and whatever the LOTRO classic servers were called, OTOH, have been up for a while now.

I put substantial hours into Everquest, WOW, City of Heroes and LotRO over the years. Elder Scrolls Online, EQII, EVE, Age of Conan and Secret World were short time flings for me. I burned out of the MMORPG scene a few years ago after being on WOW for too long and haven't been back. City of Heroes is the only one I miss (RIP Captain Fantastic and Graveyard) and I would pick it back up in a heartbeat.

@Yskonyn  So Conan Exiles? I love the genre, could care less if it's an MMORPG or not. Is this worth a look?

I spent a good part of my life playing MMORPGs...going way back to the original EverQuest. But frankly the MM part started to get old....and dealing with idiots and low life who hide behind anonymity just became too much. So now any multiplayer I do is with folks I "know."  A few years back, had a great time on dedicated Grogheads server for 7 Days to Die...that is the way to play.

WOW Classic isn't live yet.  Summer maybe?

To be far, Blizzard listened to the fans and added Classic.  Not really a cash grab.

I too was into WOW from inception but stopped a few years ago.

I often wonder if 7DTD will ever be finished. I first picked it up around Beta 4.2 and have some 2k hours under my belt. Every time I fire it back up, it's a different game. A good game or I wouldn't have so many hours invested, but still I wonder what their "end game" will look like.

A friend and I are running our own server at the moment. Its a fantastic builder / survival game, but its greatly dependent on the people on the server behaving.
Conan Exiles has this thing I call 'survival genre's catch 22': on the one hand you want to be able to build something lasting without having to start over all the time, but at the same time you need strife and action to keep gameplay exciting and fun.
Most official servers are unmoderated and try to enforce rules by restricting the times during the day or week that lets players engage in pvp and or damage structures.
I personally think PvP and Raiding shouldn't be time restricted, but rather have a few house rules to keep things orderly and fun at the same time.

Instead of having a server wipe every now and then forcing everyone to start from scratch we have gotten this idea of Seasons.
The normal server state is called Season of Reflection and runs for three months. It is governed by all normal rules for pvp and raiding (only cause enough damage to gain entry to loot what you are after). Gods are disabled.
Then comes Season of Reaving when the Gods get activated and raiding restrictions are lifted for two weeks. Ultimate carnage is allowed (our form of possible reset) and kill lists and war targets are determined.
Then comes two weeks of Season of Mending where raiding is not allowed at all, the Gods go back to their slumber and people can rebuild in relative safety (pvp is always allowed).
Thereafter a new cycle starts with a new Season of Reflection.

So I do feel the game is worth checking out, but your need to find a server that suits you.
"Pilots do not get paid for what they do daily, but they get paid for what they are capable of doing.
However, if pilots would need to do daily what they are capable of doing, nobody would dare to fly anymore."

Thanks for the info, Yskonyn. Don't think I'm ready to pull the trigger considering my lengthy backlog of games, but Exiles will be something that stays on my radar.

And I like your "Seasons". Very cool and well thought out.   :bd:

In a few weeks I am going to start Elder Scrolls Online, only because a lot of gamers have commented that it is pretty good to play solo.

It's a neat game, have you played the non-online Elder Scrolls games?

Gusington

Yep. A little bit of Arena, a little Daggerfall, a little Morrowind, some Oblivion and a ton of Skyrim.
