One of the only things that didn't suck about being on a ship on a Navy base was Retreat.  At the end of the day (sunset) on a Navy base they play a bugle call called "Retreat" during which they lower the colors on the ship.  When I had CDO I would always make a point of going on deck and watching them pull down the flag and it was always pretty cool because my ship (an LHD) was higher than most of the others so I could see all of the other ships in port going through the ceremony at the same time.

Anyway, I live right across the road from Pearl Harbor, about a couple hundred yards from the Arizona actually, and when the wind is right you can hear them play Retreat here at my house.  Apparently all the little kids were out running around out front and when they heard Retreat they all stopped playing and stood respectfully until it was over.  Pretty cool.

Here is the bugle call on youtube (in case you're wondering what it sounds like) although the version they play on base is much slower.

Just thought you guys would get a kick out of that like I did.

Aloha,

Aloha. Thanks for sharing. That's a great story.

It is stories like this that make me miss being in the military...sorta...kinda--you know what I mean?

Aloha, Toonces.
