Grim.Reaper

Although I am still on the fence about this one, this is a game series that continues to go crazy with storage requirements.  I can get OK with the storage, but with my download speed it will take anywhere from 17 hours to 25 hours (maybe worse depending on contention) even download the thing if I go with the max version.  And then comes all the usual large patches......

I ignored this game until a couple of weeks ago as my interest in Cold War era games increased. Now I can't wait for it. However I will not be buying it at full price, ever.

Yeah, not sure myself....read somewhere that it implied the campaign was only like (5) hours....I have no desire to play multi-player so on the fence.  Although they are trying to say its the best campaign ever....but they likely say that every year:)

Gus...if you're looking for something to scratch the cold war itch, this probably is not going to be it. It looks only tangentially related to the cold war, and is otherwise totally over the top.

Also, at 175GB for the SP modes? NO WAY!

175GB?? The actual Cold War took up less space.

I can deal with totally over the top, but I will be looking at other Cold War titles...Regiments looked good but it will be a while until it is out.

I never used to be interested because it was 'current' news, you know? Now that I am olde, it's not so current anymore.

Things must be pretty bleak if I'm looking back fondly at the Cold War :/

Have you tried the Eugen Wargame titles? Each one is more spectacular than the last and Epic is about to be giving away the best title in the series.

I only have Red Dragon - picked it up on sale somewhere and have not played it.

How do the earlier games hold up? I didn't know that they were set during the Cold War.

I have played and really enjoyed World in Conflict, however.

HOLY CRAP the whole Eugen collection for Wargame is on sale for 10 dollars right now on Steam...

Buy them. They are all fantastic games. The first title in the series did not originally include any time controls and that put a lot of people off. However, there is a mod for this and the next two titles incorporated time controls.

Sounds like they reduced the standard full game install size down to roughly 82GB....of course if you go for the high end graphics, will add more.  But at least step in right direction....

Darn it as I was just about to click on their link and give them a million dollars:)

Feel free to give it to me. I am Nigerian royalty, after all, and have great means to invest it.

You might want to have a look at an app-assisted boardgame called Vienna Connection, Gus.

It's playable solo or co-operatively.  It's set in 1977.  You play as a CIA team sent to investigate the death of an American citizen in Vienna.

There are 4 missions to play through. Each took me between 3-5 hours to play.  They're all inter-linked so info you discovered in mission one will become relevant in mission three, for example.

The story was interesting and quite complex and I enjoyed all the historical references to people and events (lots of Red Army Faction, Bader-Meinhof Gang, etc).  It can be a bit confusing in the beginning though as you unlock a lot of loose threads which you might not resolve until mission 3 or 4.  It can also be hard to tell if you're playing "correctly" as you aren't really sure if the choices you make early on are the right ones.

I'd also recommend that you don't allow too much time to pass between playing each mission because there is a lot of info to keep track of and if you leave it for 3-4 weeks, you might forget some details.

(also, it's better to play using a laptop and web browser instead of the app as the latest "update" to the phone/tablet app seems to have buggered things up royally.

The components are very nicely designed and the 1970s Cold War aesthetic really shines through.
