Lower decks is a comedy though right, similar to the orville? I don't think Star Trek is suited to comedy.. although I did like galaxy quest as a one off. I could not watch a whole TV series of silliness. I want to feel the wonder of space travel and exploration rather than watching people goof off and play dumb.

It's a comedy but it is not a parody nor is it absurd.  It's in many ways a very heart felt homage to the general spirit and ideals of Star Trek.  It does occasionally get serious.

I'd just describe Lower Decks as a total distillation of the heart and love for the ideals of Star Trek and what the lore and the show is about.   The characters are in no ways dumb or foolish.  They are the second line and get the crap work (For example in one episode they have to clean up the fact that Landru took back over his planet because no one bothered to check up)  but even with the grunt work of the "2nd Line of Starfleet" they do it with pride and become the legends of the "Lower Decks".

See in star trek lore even lower decks I would expect would be like the bridge of a main line federation vessel. Well run and serious without the moral problems and menial tasks that we associate today with menial labour. In other words when you say lower decks I am imagining shaggy and the scooby doo crew kinda shenanigans. I might try it though as you're not the first to recommend it. I just can't abide comedy for the sake of comedy in what should be a serious show. It's gotta be that utopian future.

I'd suggest you just try it.

Star Trek right now is NOT Discovery and Picard Season 1 and 2.

Lower Decks is light hearted, it has comedic elements, but they reflect some of the best comedic traditions of every series of Star Trek in the past.  It's less slapstick, more Trouble With Tribbles, Piece of the Action, I Mudd, Fistfull of Datas, Take Me Out to the Holosuite...

You know what Star Trek has been doing its entire run.  It has enormous heart and really touches strongly on the utopian ideal.

Star Trek has majorly course corrected after the unmitigated disaster of Discovery and Picard S 1 and 2.  Since then Lower Decks, Picard S3 and Strange New Worlds have been a major fix for the absolute crap show that came between the end of Voyager and those.

And listen, I've got the cred.  I as a kid in Orlando was in a self made Starfleet Monster Maroon that I stitched and glued together and I went to a convention in that thing and met James Doohan.   I'm old school.  I've turned off my share of Star Trek shows like Enterprise and Discovery.  I'll call em out when they're bad but I will endorse them when they're good.

Lower Decks, Season 3 of Picard and Strange New Worlds are good. They're Star Trek.

Well, the game released today with strangely little fanfare.

Anyone giving it a go?

Just in perusing the reviews and comments on Steam, think I'm going to wait on this one.

Like you mentioned before this is Stellaris with a Star Trek mod.

Sadly, most initial Steam reviews are negative.

One review snippet stuck with me: "...overall, it's not been horrible."

Too many good games out there. For me, this one is a "pass"

I'm being left extremely cold by the commentary and early reviews.

This seems to be one to let simmer on the stovetop for a while.

I know Star Trek really isn't about ship combat but I'm most disappointed that they apparently didn't throw anything in there to spice that up, even if it was just to break up the spread sheet monotony.

I'm still intrigued. Never play Stellaris so that's not a problem here.

On the other hand I have too much else to play...

Yeah, the reviews and comments are not at all encouraging.  Maybe I'll get this one down the road after Paradox rolls out the infinite DLCs to add more content and fix everything. :undecided:

I'm on the fence with this.  While I'm a Star Trek fan, simply redoing Stellaris with Star Trek names and graphics isn't going to work for me.  I may wait for a significant sale, but possibly not even then.

A buggy bare boned Stellaris Lite seems to be a consensus.  Even the positive reviews say that.

Just watching reviews while at work it looks like there's only a limited amount to do for each faction, and the aggressive factions are ruined by Stellaris' weak combat system.

Positives seem to be that it has at least a cool Star Trek feel and it's set in a pre set up galaxy with the state of the Alpha and Beta quadrants as they are 20 years prior to TNG.

This one seems like something I should love but the rest of that turns me off.  I guess it helps that I was never fond of Stellaris anyway.

Unless I hear something radically different I'm crossing this one off until it's even more budget than it currently is.
