QuoteA man in Kentucky hit the jackpot after he discovered over 700 coins from the Civil War era on his rural farm.

Some of the rarest coins that they found, 1863-P $20 Gold Liberty coins, can command "a six-figure price," according to GovMint. And they dug up 18 of them in the bounty.

The coin is so rare because it does not feature the phrase "In God We Trust," according to Live Science. The motto was added to all gold and silver currency in 1866 after the end of the Civil War. Just one coin is estimated to potentially go for six figures, according to GovMint.

I'm thinking about becoming a farmer.  Anyone have a metal detector they want to sell?    :buck2:

Having grown up in a family of farmers, in a rural farm-adjacent life: it certainly has its moments. I'd probably do better with planting than livestock personally.

^Me too. A dairy farm is not what I was thinking. Corn or wheat or something. Maybe tobacco like in the old 17th century Virginia or Carolina style  :pilgrim[1]:

Yeah, corn or wheat doesn't bitch about working late or need time-off for Family Emergencies.

Homemade corn syrup?  Mmmmmm...

My wife grew up on a small farm/ranch.  She won't let me live within 5 miles of a barn now.

Numismatics can be very lucrative.  If you know what it means.

Yeah but they can't go indoors when the weather was bad.  Had a job lined up driving a combine for a buddy of mine who planted 9,000 acres of winter wheat.  Between the drought last fall and through the early spring and then the 6 week long series of storms he is going to harvest maybe 500 acres.  So much for my part time job.

All the crew you need to run your equipment, especially during narrow harvest windows, can DEFINITELY complain about working late or needing time off for Family Emergencies. ;)

The good news, is that you can invest in farming without actually owning a farm! -- which admittedly also voids all the fun, as well as the toils.

Farmers go to Acretrader.com to have them come certify the farm, and then they raise money from investors for operating expenses by selling off 10% return on investments after x-many years.

On the other hand, the Farming Simulator series has developed very well over the years, especially recently. I've read reviews and seen videos from professional farmers (not even necessarily retired) who like to play the game to relax!

My Mom and her older brother, a few years ago, were absolutely astounded there were 3D simulation games about farming. I showed them the "Farmers Dynasty" game I was playing at the time, to their fascination. Both grew up farming, and Uncle Butch still did so at that time (being also one of the largest farming landowners in the county.)

Not making it up! -- and that was his own chosen nickname. His real name is J.R. (John Robert.)

Also, about to leave for his birthday party in a few minutes.  :present:
