Sure, get me the base image to work from.  Minimum 800x800 resolution, and I can take it from there

You could put Thermopylae and the date on the back, put both on the back, or Thermopylae in front under the helmet and the inscription on the back.

He needs a base image to start with. That's part of the problem. If you have an image (that you own the copyright to or is open source) of a hoplite's head, that gets us pretty far down the road.

I can go out and take a photo of my fat ass holding a shotgun looking for zombies, but it probably won't be cool enough to sell. However, we want all this to be legally correct, so hijacking someone else's images isn't kosher.

There are some things that can be done that don't violate copyrights.  It's a longer discussion than we need to have in an open forum.

Suffice to say, I can do a LOT, but I need images to work from.  What I've been working from are my own collection of stuff, and there's not a lot of ancient / medieval / anything-other-than-contemporary/modern in there.

Brant, forgive my ignorance. 
Was thinking of seeing what may be in some really old works on ancient warfare. 
My understanding is that if older than 75 years, they are considered out of copyright?
If I can scan them, is 800dpi the resolution you need?  Or does the 800 refer to size in this case?
