Why separate accounts for support?

Why do so many games do this, particularly MMOs?  You have to have an account anyway, so why can't support be done through that?  Why do you have to make a separate account just for support?  It's really annoying!  Does anyone have any idea why this is so common and what the reason is?

Drives me nuts, too.  But I've only experienced that once or maybe twice thus far.

I suppose that it's because they purchased some outside web support software, and it's not directly integrated into their own stuff.

Anytime they can put up another obstacle, it cuts down on the number of support tickets.

Since one of the biggest support complaints is account hacking, I'd guess that's also part of the reason for keeping a support account separate from a game account.

Ah, good points, all.  Doesn't make it any less annoying though!

Ha!  I did submit a support ticket last night and it was their site that prompted this thread, yeah, but as a matter of fact I didn't have to create an account to submit the ticket.  So yes, all is still well in the world of Guild Wars 2, thanks. :P
