Entirely new engine to beef up the land war mechanics and improve the AI.

First in a series of games using this engine is the hope.

Great theatre that is very under represented.

Definitely looking forward to it.  Have read a couple books on it and even have a computer game on it created by a Spaniard, I believe.  Can't remember it's name or what the heck I did with it!

Found it!  Espana 1936 from AGEOD/Matrix in 2013.

Yes I have that one but I never really got into the Ageod Athena engine. The army organisation and command control was not very user friendly I found.
I think the same designer is behind the SGS games on the SCW but that is too abstract for me....not a criticism of this Matrix offering it appears :-)

I initially was very into the early AGEOD games.  But by the time of the WW1 game I got extremely frustrated.

Very excited for War in Spain and the possibilities it brings for future games using the new and improved version of the WITPAE engine! WITPAE is my favorite war gaming engine with the watchable air and naval battles with individual pilots and officers and the fact that this is being improved on especially in the land aspect is HUGE news! Very happy and excited to hear this and that this type of game will live on!

Dammit Carl!

Nice. The interwar period is an era of fascination for me; in as much as the Russo-Japanese War, the Boer War, etc. hinted at the grinder that WW1 would become, the Spanish Civil War, the Italian Ethiopian adventures etc. hinted at the world war that was to come next.  I dare say that the fight in Ukraine is as much a watershed moment that points to what to expect in the next big one too.

I have no interest in the conflict and I never liked the Ageod engine.

Sounds like this is more related to the witp engine than the ageod engine though.  I'm guessing starting with a smaller conflict like Spain will then bring it to the larger ww2 games later.

If it is the Med theatre I would go so far to say it will be the best treatment of the air and naval struggle (in particular) in the Med by a country mile.

Generally PC games treat the Med as very much a sideshow and at a scale that makes any sort of cat and mouse challenge redundant.

Not bashing the project or anything, but isn't the weakest part of the WitP engine the land campaign?

They started with the WITP engine and modified it to greatly expand land combat.

Commander Cody

Will be interesting to see how they improved the ground game. Superficially, using the WITP engine for this war doesn't make sense, as WITP-AE's ground part isn't that great. It's fine for island combat, but not as good for large landmass combat in my opinion. The naval and air aspects can't be beat, though, which makes WITP-AE the best game for the Pacific War.

Cheers,
CC
