Anyone read Chickenhawk by Bob Mason? He flew one of the Huey's that took supplies into X-Ray under fire. 'Tis a good book.

On the nose though - awesome book. Read it several times and it's still fresh when you read it again.

I was (at one time) trying to get his follow up book...but it cost a fair whack and I couldn't get it in the UK

Actually - it's on Amazon and it's called Back in the World. In the UK (now) it's only £17 - buying now!

Awesome JD, I have never read that either, although, like you, I have read Chickenhawk several times over the years.

I seem to remember once reading a book by a guy who flew Cobra's as well, but can I bugger-as-like recall the name of the the book.

Hmm, it could have been. The one I do remember though is 'Low level hell'

FWIW...I actually liked Vietnam Medevac.  It was done by the same guys who did the Search and Rescue / Coastal Heroes games.  The flight model is neither arcade-ish nor is it hi-fi...it's sort of "tricky" (means...you gotta spend a bit of time to figure out how to fly, hover and land) and things like weather conditions (wind, rain) landing conditions (narrow landing areas, heaving decks on ships) make rescues a little bit more challenging than "land - recover - rinse - repeat".

It also (a-historically for a med-evac copter, I believe) has a door-gunner position which allows you to blast away at vietcong.  I can't remember if ground fire is at all effective, but it's still kinda fun to hover your bird on the edge of a ville, and blast away.

Also IIRC there were a variety of missions ("ass and trash", rescue downed pilots / stranded units, and med-evac) that added a least some variety...but some of the missions were impossible to finish.  I recall doing one "rescue the sailors from the sinking ship in the tropical storm" missions a few dozen times until I finally got it right.

Not bad for $7 but don't be expecting great shakes, either.

Now, the problem is, how to divide five Afghans from three mules and have two Englishmen left over.
