Whether or not a dongle is ridiculous is a purely subjective call.  So long as you're marketing a product to the client, you've just got to realize that requiring a dongle for your product will drive an inferior client experience.

Whether the security gains are offset by the client experience loss is purely a business decision, if one that very transparently affects your customers...

I don't mean to be down on esims, per se. A company can charge any price they like and use any DRM tech. they please. It is called a business strategy. Whether the product will sell given those parameters is another matter.

This is obviously not a product for the casual tank simmer. I would have to put myself in that category. I assume there are others. If eSims does not need that part of the market I completely understand their strategy.

Dongle's are a technology from a bygone era, even then most people thought the idea ridiculous. Why not go back to un-photocopy-able sheets of enigma machine codes instead - it weighs less! ;)

Except they were photocopyable from what I remember.
Or you could just draw them easily with a pencil&paper.
