Thanks guys.

After my first two games of doing a passable job, I've been getting slaughtered.  Looks like my beginner's luck is over.

Another question:  Do any of you guys use 3rd Person view ('L' key)?  I'm finding that the most difficult obstacle, in a melee, is trying to quickly find out where the my potential target went after the initial run-in and ensuing circle strafe crap.  By the time I get turned and start-up a swing with a slow weapon (most of them), the guy has already hit me and I'm 'staggered', in a stupor, so as to be ineffective while he pummels me dead once or twice more.  So that first spin-around is generally the make or break of it.

I tried a little archer but just plain suck at it.  I had more kills with my dagger than my crossbow - and especially the bow, when I tried that one.  Mostly because I was careful not to shoot too close to friendlies, at least that's the excuse I'm sticking with.   Now that I know how to switch classes mid-game, perhaps I'll be able to choose a bit better depending on the map & where I'm trying to operate.

I'd say that the servers are almost too full.  Been pretty tight getting into games this weekend.  I'd definitely like to check out WotR sometime, just because it sounds more tactical as opposed to hackfest but I'm in no big hurry for more first-person games, this is more than enough to fill my quota.

Nefaro,
I find for me personally, using the 3rd person view works best for my situational awareness. And, after much experimentation I prefer using the two-handed longsword with no shield, it gives me a combat edge because striking someone with that particular weapon does one hell of a lot of damage. If you don't use a shield the "F" key becomes a kick instead of a shove, and that's made quite an improvement for me when trying to overcome an opponent. I usually do a block with the longsword, then quickly step forward with a kick to an opponent and then follow through with a good roundhouse with the longsword and then back again. BTW, the "P" key will also toggle your view from 1st person to half-3rd person and then full 3rd-person.

And yeah, Gus, I'm ready for a Groghead themed match in Chivalry too.

^Welcome trek! And thanks all for posting that players can play in 3rd person...I didn't know and I love playing games like this in 3rd person, especially Skyrim and the like. I find it more immersive than first person which may sound odd but well there you have it.

I find myself playing the Medium class with sword and firebomb more often.  Can't hit anything on 3rd person view.  Also blocking needs to be precise... must press at the right time and put the dot st the right place.  I find it hard to block in 3rd person.

I just finished playing a Conquest match in WOTR. For some reason I still haven't got the hang of the controls in this game like I have in Chivalry. When I respawn, often in WOTR I take on the role of the LongBowMan and get up on a rooftop and pick off players. I got a couple of head shots last match. Also, for the first time I had enough XP to respawn as a Foot Knight. I'm going to have to practice more for WOTR I'm afraid.

Comparing the two games as far as server availability and stability, right now WOTR is more accessible and stable.

I usually use 1st person view, especially in combat.  I will sometimes switch to 3rd person when I'm in a particularly crowded area as it can give you a little extra time to react to attacks from the flanks and rear.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I actually ran back to M&B Napoleonic Wars for a bit tonight to see if I, indeed, enjoy it more.  And I do.  Does that mean I might enjoy WotR more than Chiv?  :o  No matter.. I think it's the musket firing, bayoneting, cavalry riding, and cannon fire that tips it for me so the whole medieval thing probably doesn't grab me as much.

I only play M&B Napoleonic in commander mode.

You can try out WotR but it's still a brawl.

I figure that I've already got one medieval multiplayer slasher so it's enough right now.

I have actually improved a bit after using the 'P' key to switch into 3rd-person view (the second close-in one directly above the head).  It's easier to turn and locate enemies circle-strafing near me, and notably easier to follow through on side-swings in order to connect in those cases.

Whomever recommended using the Long/War-sword two handed was spot on (SDR?  Was that you?).  After switching to that, I've found that doing a side-swing and rotating my view around, and through, an opponent is the easiest way to hit.  I suppose it's a sweet spot because it seems to have a nice combination of reach, speed, and damage.

Nefaro,
That was me talking about the two-handed LongSword. Yeah, for me that weapon seems to work best since I'm old and my movements are probably slower than the younger opponents I face. Also the long reach of that sword allows you to slash your opponent when some of his weapons are out of range. Have you tried using the "F" key kick yet? You may want to experiment with mapping that move to another key that is more convenient for you to hit in the heat of battle.  Another reason I use the 3rd person view besides SA is that the 1st person view in this particular game seems to make me nauseous after only a few minutes.

I think we are both suffering from the same performance issues in the game. Yesterday I was fighting pretty well, and thought I was improving. But, today I'm getting killed!

Practice! Practice! Practice!

I've used kick on occasion, but mostly against shield spammers or to kick an enemy archer off a high spot.

I've unlocked all the Longsword-War Sword chain already.  The Two-handers are kinda nice too, but one tough thing to do is get used to a new weapon.  Takes practice for each one, for sure.

Even with a higher FOV, the Unreal Engine seems to still make me a tad queasy for some reason.  I think it's just how close the ground is displayed & it tends to give me motion sickness when I'm moving (all the time) because it just looks too close in comparison to the peripheral view when in a widescreen format, perhaps.  I've completely eradicated my queasiness by changing to a 4:3 screen ratio (1280x1024 and lowered back to 100 FOV) and have no problems now.  This has also worked for me in other Unreal games so whatever the problem, that fixes it.

As with many first-person shooters, it's all about timing.  It can be especially painful when you're up-close and attempting to block/parry and hit someone while strafing around each other because even a halfway decent ping speed still has enough of a delay to make you miss what it looked like (on your screen) should've been a hit.  It's not too bad under 100ms except when people with higher pings are playing, as is usually the case in multiplayer FPSes.  It's just takes even more foresight being up close so often.

Long swords have some disadvantage.
1)  You hit the wall in tight spaces.  - Learn to use halberds, bills, spears.  It's fun to stab them away at a distance.
2)  You kill your friends as well.  - Short weapons like mace and axe (short sword if you are an expert) will save the lives of your friends.  You're ganging up on the enemy anyway.

I try to use a stab or an overhead swing in tight quarters like that.  While the swords don't have quite the reach of polearms in a stab, they're probably the second best at it.  ;)

Unfortunately, there will be lots of friendly hits either way you go.  Since you can't predict where your buddies are gonna be heading next.  I try not to dive into anything more than what's already a 1v1 since it just hinders your teammates.  I've seen too many 1v3s end up with the solo guy winning too much due to all the friendly hits while he just moves around them.

Silent Disapproval Robot

The good thing about two-handed swords is that the entire surface is potentially lethal so, if you're playing as a vanguard, you don't have to worry about distance as much as you would had you chosen a spear or a pole-arm as your main weapon.  The disadvantage is that it doesn't have as much reach and it's a little slower to recover.  I'm still experimenting to see which weapon I prefer.
