Windows 8 and gaming

I'm not really thinking about getting Windows 8 until I buy a new machine (probably 2014)...but I was wondering - if I did get Windows 8 and a touch screen - what would current strategy mouse activated games work like?

Would you really be able to click the screen and move a unit to a new hex?

How would double clicking work? Double tapping?

What about right clicking?

I'm inrtuiged to know if current games would work (as I guess it's just MS turning the touch screen into a "mouse pad").

Having said that - would it be cmfortable - reaching to your "vertically standing monitor to move units? Surely your arm would get tired?

I've seen people who've changed the orientation of thier monitors from vertical to more prone at like a 45 degree angle. That way you don't have to reach.

For me, I'd like to try a large touch screen for use with the DCS flight sims.

I've been using Windows 8 since it was released to manufacturers, and I really prefer it now. As an IT person, I can do what I need to do quicker.

I don't see why you'd use the touch features on it, unless it's specifically on some touch tablet. Which would be nice, having a full Windows OS on one, but it'd also be too pricey for my frugal ass.

I just ordered an 15" Acer 'Ultrabook' for when I'll often be laid up the next couple months and made sure I got Win7 on it so I don't have to deal with some of the current compatibility issues in Win8. I'll probably stick with Win7 until they get that MS curse of every other OS being a PoS. So look to Win9 in the future, young man!

Well - they do say "every other" MS OS is a good build...the previous ones being the test bed. Windows 7 being the decent build for the testbed Vista, Windows 8 being the testbed for ?

I really don't want to be 'touching' my monitor a lot... lol.. bad enough with tablets, but they are small and convient, so it's the way to go..

But for PC. I prefer the good old mouse...

I should break down and get Air Display for my tablet so I can use it for Switch Panels, like Jomni posted on an earlier thread..

Touch screen should be fun for DCS A-10, Falcon and FSx.

Hold you horses with Air display. It stopped working on my iPad and we don't have a solution yet. Half of the reviews say it does not work.

I have windows 8 - and believe me - thats where they are going with this. They have a fairly un - obvious button to access the desktop currently - maybe not the next version but the one after that I would not be at all surprised if its not there.

Do you really think though that you waon't be able to run "normal" or "other" games or however you want to class them on a future Windows machine?

I thought their touch screen and new layout was really more from a usability view as peoples touchpads and phones pretty much look very similar

Windows RT - is what microsoft see as their future. Windows pro was to lessen the howels of derision. It may take a few years but RT will be the norm in the future (but running intel CPU's). The new interface is anything but a bit of window dressing as far as I am concerned and you have to code specifically for it to get it to run from that interface. Its their plan - and as far as an apple killer goes its a good one. For consumers less so. Take for example what they have done with XNA. Probably the finest game creation architecture ever written. They have ended support for it as far as RT goes but this is only because I beleive they are building their own Xcode for the surface and RT os.

So.. in the future, Microsoft is taking a decidedly Apple-like tack by locking down what can be installed on their devices, so that you're always forced to go through their company??
