The gateway is China. Nobody farts in Norkland without permission from Beijing.

The way to fix things it to flood the country with AK-47s and a bunch of 7.62.

Well ... it seems even that relationship is getting very strained.

Is it? China could have slapped him down. If they don't they are using the norks. The norks wont be using their weapons against the US directly, they will funnel the tech to Iran, who will supply it around the middle east. The Arabs will use it, wanting the blame to go back to Iran. They are all using each other.

The tech must not get out.

The Costco Kimchi is F*ing awesome.

Thanks for the tip. :)

I read a list of the top 10 broad spectrum nutrient dense foods. Kimchi was at the top along with onions.

The costco stuff is in a plastic peanut butter size jar with a plastic red lid. The lid has a flip up arc handle built in. The kimchi is not very hot, maybe like a mild salsa. Somehow you just want to eat more.

F&$k kimchi.  I actually liked the stuff initially but Korea's innate ability to make every thing suck reared its ugly  head.

I had to eat breakfast and lunch with my students.  We had kimchi with every god-damned meal. If I went out for dinner, I was guaranteed a heaping helping of kimchi with every meal.  I would even get kimchi in the pubs as a side for the excrable beer they serve in Korea.  I was given a 5 litre bucket of the stuff as a welcoming gift.  I was given a  litre bucket for my birthday.  I was given 10 litres for "teacher appreciation day."

The town I worked in was an industrial hellhole with about 5 guys for ever girl.  All the knuckl dragging factory workers would immediately head to the nearest bar as soon as they got off shift and would drink themselves stupid as quickly as possible.  By 8pm, you'd have to play hopscotch over the kimchi and noodle vomit landmines that littered the sidewalks every night.  Then the seagulls would come and eat the puke and fly off drunkenly into windows.  Paradise.....

My dad said the same about Egypt when he was there (in 8th Army) - said it smelt like thousands of years of camel piss

My uncle was there with Lord Strathcona's Horse (not as lame as it sounds):

He said that it was either too f&^%ing hot, or too f^&*ing cold, and the mountains went the wrong way.

Bob, this will probably sound very politically incorrect, but my grandfather was involved in World War I.  He told a few stories, not many, but one that sticks in my memory was how the german trenches smelled.
They had good field hygiene, and weren't unclean.  But their food rations, or something, made the trenches smell noticeably.  Until they took the trenches, the troops weren't sure where the smell came from.
Did your father mention anything about that in North Africa?

Yuk - I have heard silmilar stories. Dad said that pretty much everything ponged in North Africa, although you got used to it. He also said that after a while, the most prevasive smell was that of petrol. One of the reasons being that gasoline was more plentiful than water, which was rationed, and was often used for washing clothes and even hands. He told me that the main method of cleaning mess gear was with sand - and there was plenty of that.

The most unoleasent thing, however, and the most hated duty, was recovery of knocked-out tanks (from both sides) especially when this entailled the removal of dead crewmen, and after the vehicle may have been in the hot sun for several days. He said the you knew you had a bad one well before you got to it, even if you made an 'up-wind' approach.

He did spend some time in the line at Anzio, and said that after a while, no matter how careful you tried to be with hygene, after a while, it did get a bit 'ripe' in the trenches.

Like most vets, he had lots of strories to tell. Sadly, he's been gone now for 10 years and I still miss him a lot. Not only a great farther, but a good friend.

In Vietnam, there would often be firefights near the Mekong River.  There was a type of grass that probably was a bamboo offshoot, that we called elephant grass.  It could easily be eight feet tall, and grew almost overnight after a rain.
Sometimes, it was necessary to wait a day or three to find the dead by the decomposition smell in that grass.
When I find a dead mouse and get a whiff of the scent, sometimes it brings me right back to the Plain of Reeds.
