Putting it another way, though:

Are ANY of the games under discussion on a par with Master of Magic?

I have had it on my hard drive(s) since its release on 3.5'' disks and many have tried, but none have o'er-topped that particular mountain.

I have yet to find a PC game that was on a par with Master of Magic. I, too, have had it on the hard drive of my PC since I purchased it new from MicroProse on 3.5" floppies.
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

To each his own GB.....for me, both FE:LH and AoW are far, far better than Master of Magic ever was.  And that says a lot because, in its day, Master of Magic was a very good game...I put many hours into it.

To each his own indeed, Rayfer. I own and have played both FE:LH and AoW and consider them to be inferior to Master of Magic.

LOL...."Eye of the Beholder"...remember that old gem? You had to get out the graph paper to plot the dungeon.

Yes! I remember Eye of the Beholder. It was the first game I bought a cluebook for. I kept running into those teleportation traps and couldn't figure out what was going on. Those were tricky people at SSI, but good-hearted (one of the told me where the vampire was when I was stumped while playing Pool of Radiance.

Just finished my first game as a High Elf Arch Druid.... I made a push to the west and had Merlin on his heals and currently have 50K + Gold 20K + Mana and have maxed out all of the research.  I also have a ton of The Horned god units which are Tier IV units.  It was just a matter of time so I decided to start a new game.

One critique I would make:  It seems like lower-end units become virtually useless after you reach a certain point, as they simply cannot compete with Tier IV units.  Either the former need to be beefed up considerably, or the latter need to be nerfed and/or made *much* more expensive to balance things out IMO.

Tier I units become scouts for me later on in the game... I use them to scout a head of my larger armies.  Tier I ranged units can be ok when buffed, but later on you have to have pretty strong units.  I also hate the global spells that allow you to spam strike units as well.

They should probably add some kind of Upgrade equipment in a DLC, specific to each unit.  Perhaps have those upgrades unlock with some buildings or something.  Or more involved experience upgrades?

I think the experience & equipment upgrades in Warlock were a nice way of upgrading your early units.  Even though they may not be able to stand up to some of the bigger/later stuff, they could still improve a good deal with use and extra equipment purchased from some buildings you could construct.

Okay dumb question here how do I get access to higher tiered units? I'm building all of the barracks and what seems like all the military buildings but I'm still pumping out regular tier one swordsman and longbow units. Am i doing something wrong? Is there a building  or some spell I have to cast to get tier two units or something?

I would ask on the steam forums but-as usual- the 14 year olds are too busy posting about how everything sucks. (I love this one: "this game is so boring. I was able to just sit in 3 cities and do nothing for 100 turns and then I started spamming units"...yeah, no kidding...if you don't interact with the game, it will be boring)

Also, I can build a port in my elf city but not my dwarf city of human city. In both I have the prerequisite building (builders something-or-other)

Higher tier units come from higher tier buildings, which are unlocked through research.  Rt-clicking on research options in you spell book should reveal which spells/abilities you need.

As to being able to build a port in one city and not another, (I don't mean to be insulting), but are they both on the shore?

Lol...yep, both on shore. I was thinking maybe goblins and dwarfs can't build baits but then my human city couldn't. Ok, so in order to get higher tired units I need to build the proper buildings made possible from research. So far I don't see any spells tang do that but I will try to right click

Thanks

Edit: can you think of the name of a spell that would open up buildings? All I see are spells that do damage, change land or do something to cities (like reduce happiness, increase gold, etc)

Also, I saw something about tier 4 units only being able to be produced in a metropolis? Does city size determine unit types two.

Finally...I'm getting frustrated with these games that don't have a manual. I'm sorry but in game "encyclopedias" are insufficient. I shouldn't have to scour forums to figure out basic mechanics. In this day and age, you can make it in a PDF so cost isn't the issue. I chalk it up to laziness
