I'd forget Kharkov entirely, you can't save during 3-D combat and the operational layer is very simple compared to APOS.
Gen. Montgomery: "Your men don't salute much."
Gen. Freyberg: "Well, if you wave at them they'll usually wave back."

I have loved this game for years and the advice to stick through the learning curve of the US is very important.  (I personally didn't find that it got intuitive after use I just learned how to overcome its quirks).

Great game and lots of fun

Wish I had known that before buying several months ago.  :P Thanks, though!

I played a couple turns of a shorter op thus far.  My biggest complaint about the gameplay is that long stretch of nothing happening at the beginning of each tactical battle when I'm defending.  Time compression doesn't want to 'compress' too terribly fast, either.

I'm sure it's needed because the AI obviously concentrates it's forces for an attack, which is a damn good thing.  I just wish it got done faster.

The obvious draw of AP is the turn-based Operational level.  It's not just some linked scenarios, but the player gives move orders and has to account for fatigue, fuel, ammo, etc.  That's what makes this one shine.  This extra layer should've been done in other tactical wargames long ago, although the replayability still certainly goes to Panzer Command Ostfront for the random battles/campaigns and easier interface.  I've not been terribly impressed with AP's tac AI but I suppose the scenario/operation creators have adjusted for it.

Same here.
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.
