JPL Hit by Chinese Hackers

Bad News:

Chinese hackers gained control over NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in November, which could have allowed them delete sensitive files, add user accounts to mission-critical systems, upload hacking tools, and more -- all at a central repository of U.S. space technology, according to a report released Wednesday afternoon by the Office of the Inspector General.

That report revealed scant details of an ongoing investigation into the incident against the Pasadena, Calif., lab, noting only that cyberattacks against the JPL involved Chinese-based Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.

Paul K. Martin, NASA's inspector general, put his conclusions bluntly.

"The attackers had full functional control over these networks," he wrote.

JPL is a jewel in NASA's space technology crown.

You would think NASA would have invested in better security, if doors are left open just like in the real world, someone is going to come in. Just like the Gary Mckinnon case, he did not even need to hack his way in ever. There was always open doors. Interestingly the global risk 2012 has cyber threats way up high this year. Like how the text highlight Chinese hackers as if to reinforce the old them and us mentality. When really the attackers could be American or anywhere using Chinese proxy's.

Yes , I have alot of time for haxors and indeed admiration. Now from reading other your other thread I know you have had a negative experience of cyber crime and can appreciate your anger, chances are the folks behind that are not even hackers, just dicks running some scripts or bought your data. Now when I say I admire them "hackers" I mean the real ones who have actual skill, the sort of guys and gals who made the internet, or individuals command the power to take on the alphabet agencies,mega corps and governments of godlike stature from their bedrooms. The sort who pioneer open source, who challenge the business as usual model.
