The encircling units are Paladins of Death, Black Minotaurs and Taishar Firsts.  The Mage is a Hero, but does NOT have enough Resistances to survive one hit.  The pattern of my men in that screenie is how I am going to try to contain the Avatar until it dies.

Down 129 HP.  Just 871 more to go :)

Just to add a litle spice to the mix, the A.I. throws Evil Sorcerors at me.  They are close, and my Phoenix and some Koati Wizards will deal with them.

Ratville is anchoring the attack now.  And I've done a few more points of damage.

Looks like so far, so good!

How are your units holding up?  *Are* they holding up?

Wow that is one tough nut to crack.  Remind me never to go looking for one of those things.

That s.o.b. avatar killed my Level 10 Mage Hero!  And I lost the artifacts, too!!

Got him down to half.  Each Turn he heals +50.  Another of the many pain in the neck things about avatars.  You can also see a spacing error outside Ratville.  My Dwarves are in the city and the Warrior Hero is in the hex NW of it.  The avatar will sweep attack me for some goodly damage.

You can see the fight has moved to Eatmor and he is down to 225HP.  His time is almost up.

A large reward for not much work.  Just need to get a unit over there to deal with them.

Philippe de Hee Haw, my Warrior Hero, administers the coup de grace.

It took me eighteen Turns to defeat the avatar.  I lost two Heroes, a Black Minotaurs and I think that's it.  With the units I finally got into place, I was able to surround him and slowly whittle away those HP.  I had beaucoup Mana and spent it mostly on keeping my three best combatants healed, de Hee Haw, the Paladins of Death and my Dwarven Overcomers. The one time my Spirit of Light attacked the avatar, it did moderate damage and survived the attack.  It shouldn't have according to how I understand the damage and resistance dynamic, but, whatever.  The game is won and I don't have to AAR that anymore.  Thank you all for following through to the end.  It's been an honor.
