That was when it was in alpha. It was then reduced to 59.99 and then reduced again to 49.99.

lol

I don't get how such a model can work.

I don't mind buying into beta - even alpha, but at a reduced price. No way in hell I'd actually pay MORE for beta or alpha. Though I suppose no-one was to know the price would drop. I mean, in one of the beta's I bought into, it's entirely possible they reduce the price on release and I wouldn't have known they'd do that.

It does look pretty cool, but I do think it looks too frenetic for me

Well, it must work, because they raised over $2,000,000 in the kickstarter phase. People are willing to pay a premium in order to help support the game's development. Look at Battle of Stalingrad...that is also priced at $94.99.  Heck, look at the alpha price for Elite...its f'ing $300!!!!!

I guess where there's a market, why the hell not.

Yeah. I think I bought in when it dropped to 59.99. That was more than I would have liked to pay, but I really wanted to try this one out. I agree, 99.99 is too much. I've resisted buying into BoS and I haven't even considered buying into Elite.

$2M is pretty compelling evidence the model works. I wonder what the release price is going to be if it's down to $29.99 in gamma, after being at least $49.99 and $99.99 at various earlier points in development.

The game looks fantastically cool, but if I can't even handle european escalation, there's no way I'll be able to deal with PA.

For me, seeing those planets move...WOW...I can just see how much I would suck at this...it wouldn't be long before I found myself with the enemy on my doorstep and I've researched pencils!

They had to set the Alpha price at that because that was the Kickstarter price to allow Alpha access. Otherwise, KS backers would have lost their minds.  ;D

skeptical.platypus

How many kickstarter backers do you think are losing their minds that people can now pay $29.99 for a gamma release? Did the $100 kickstarter offer any vanity options?

I didn't see the Kickstarter for this, so they may very well have been upfront about their pricing model and offered more goodies at the $100 kickstarter level, but I'm having a hard time understanding how someone who had paid $100 for less isn't a little peeved at the option of paying $29.99 now, for what appears to be far more.

That's part of the reason why I couldn't understand how a model such as this works.  ??? :o

They only get less if the game doesn't get made.  If it gets finished then they get a chance to play it early and influence its design.  Still, way too much difference in price (100 vs 30).

Jarhead0331

I don't think anyone is losing their mind over it because it has been known from the beginning that the closer the game got to release, the cheaper it would get.  This isn't some slick move on the part of the developers.  Its been part of the plan all along.

^ I don't think it was a slick move on behalf of the developers. I don't think you were suggesting I did - I just wanted to make clear that wasn't what I was wondering about.

I guess I just don't get why someone would pay $100 for something when they KNOW it'll be $30. Maybe you have to want something badly enough...maybe there's a game out there in the future that will show me how you get to make that decision, but I can't recall having come across one to date :-)

But that would mean somewhere out there is your favourite genre JD, and maybe upon finding it you'd discover the game that stops you buying anything that's released in your frantic search for it  :P

I would LOVE if that happened!
