These certainly are tough fights, particularly after the latest patch.  After giving it some thought and really internalizing that I wasn't playing with modern US Infantry/Marines and M1A2s like in CMSF, I think I've hit on the necessary tactics. 

What I can tell you is that all the AARs I've watched on Youtube (and much of the advice on the CM forums) miss using the critical asset of artillery effectively in this mission.  The briefing actually tells you what your tactics ought to be, if you just pay attention to it. This scenario is proving to be a pretty interesting learning experience, if I can remember the lesson the next time I have to try a frontal assault across open ground.

One of the scenarios in the "Road to Monteborg" campaign has you attacking fortified German positions, flanked by mine fields, with AT defenses and mortars. You get one beat-up battalion and 4 Stuart light tanks. The only way to win is to use your arty. effectively( 105mm mortars & 8in. howitzers). Where you hit the Germans with them, you can drive a battleship through.
