Man, this time zone thing is a bitch.

Judge, in case you didn't know you can also just hit Ctrl-E and the engines will go through an auto-start sequence.  Maybe not hardcore, but I just pretend my copilot is doing the start.   ;D  Seriously, I only have so long to play games a day so it pays to burn through the trivial stuff sometimes.

Also, second that the Lear isn't modeled very thoroughly, but it's good enough to get started.  I'm definitely going to be adding some payware add-ons shortly.

Man, I haven't been drawn into a game as hard as Air Hauler has captured me in a long time.  I had the whole "thinking about it at work" today and that almost never happens to me anymore with computer games.  Like you I was going to be all hardcore and work my way up, but even with the Lear it's going to be a long haul before I get into my L-1011!

Yesterday I hired two pilots and bought a Mooney Bravo.  What you want to do is make sure the AI if flying your planes when you're not flying yourself.  So last night I finished my flight in the Lear and then assigned some trips to my two pilots; one in the Lear and one in the Mooney.  So while I was sleeping my little AI guys were making me money.  When I got home from work I set up some routes for the Mooney with pilot#2, went to work out, and now I'm going to take the Lear up for a few flights.  Then before I go to bed I'll set up some more Lear flights with pilot#1 and hopefully, if I plan it right, bank another 50-100k overnight.

I haven't figured out if it's cost effective to buy another Mooney or Cessna and hire a third pilot or keep saving for a bigger plane so I can haul more payload.  I'm not a business guy, so I don't know the optimum money-making strategy.  But man is this fun!

Do you have to leave the computer on and Air Hauler running for the AI pilots to do their stuff or does Air Hauler just work out that they managed it and bank the money when you start it (I'm presuming it's the latter).

I wonder if there's any calculations regarding failures and damage to AI aircraft - hard landings, bad weather etc.

I got hugely caught out by the Lear. I took it 600 miles yesterday and couldn't land - my closure rate to the airport surprised me because I'm used to flying Cessnas. I missed the airfield by a long shot (was still about 1500ft before I realised I was never going to make it) and flew right on past. I decided to go round and pay more attention - and FSX crashed!

It's time based.  Air hauler time is synced to real world. It will compute the time for the AI to finish the job based on distance and aircraft cruise speed. You can then quit AH. The next time you open AH, it will check for status of AI flights.  Sometimes the cargo or plane breaks based on AI skill. Weather does not affect AI flights.

A bit of a cheat.  Time acceleration in FSX does not apply in air hauler.  Example, a job expiring in 2 hours but takes 4 hours to fly can still be done by using 4x acceleration in the sim.  All in all it will take you just 1 to 2 hours flying in real time and still within AH's static deadline.

Thx -  I'm some ways off AI pilots in my Cessna career.

Yeah - I found that cheat some time ago. It's a massive PITA when flying IFR - especially tagged with what I mentioned earlier about increase/decrease altitude and turn right/turn left heading change instructions from ATC because with the speed increase on - you normally miss the final call from ATC before they drop your IFR

We'll definitely have to try and do a flight together this weekend Judge. Maybe if I can sneak on Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

None of those links actually link to anything PE

Hmmm. will have to retry... they are all found on flightsim.com

You do take damage if you land hard or otherwise crash your plane.  I was taking the Lear into a really small field last night.  Got bad vectors from ATC (sometimes on multi-leg trips ATC seems to get confused about your destination).  Went visual.  It was night and there was a haze layer and I had trouble breaking out the field.  I got it back just came in badly.  Tried to waveoff but realized I wasn't going to get enough thrust in time so I tried to salvage the landing and smashed my nose gear to the tune of a $78,000 repair bill.  Ouch!

I've got my little AI guys working a tough night shift.  I don't know if AH models pilot fatigue, but they're both flying solid 8 hour days this evening while I sleep.

I'm getting much better at flying the lear in VFR conditions.  Going to have to do some research to figure out how to get the ILS set up.  However it is, it's not intuitive.

I'm beat, gotta hit the rack.  More tomorrow!

I used to give each of my AI two jobs in a day.

Why do people fly VFR? I always fly IFR so I am given prompts from ATC - VFR seems rather empty to me.

I read an article once which explained other differences between VFR and IFR in game - but I really can't remember them.

Any preference why the people who fly VFR do so?

VFR has less interaction with ATC and you  are more free to do whatever you want (within certain limitations).

I fly IFR most of the time because I don't want the weather to spoil my flight.

Let's try this again.  The best workhorse for Air Hauler I believe is the C-47/C-117D/BT-67 and the L-188.  Also the (payware) Carenado C208B Cargomaster is great as well.  I have a ton of others but thought I would list some freeware that looks and works great for cargo flights.  They all have good VCs as well.
