It could be connected to Drax's true heritage (should they follow the comics). Thanos has been to Earth, and killed Drax's family.  He could have knocked- up Quill's mom, or maybe it was Ronan. Or maybe it really will be Jason/J'son, and all the chatter is a diversion.

It isn't just chatter -- the 'true father' angle is very explicitly brought up within the valid 'science of the film' in a scene that has no point except to report this as established fact and as an explanation of why he could do a particular thing without immediately dying.

The Thanos theory: he doesn't really have children (that I can recall offhand). He adopts children from races he destroys; Gamora explicitly explains she was adopted that way. Also...

That smile [Thanos] gave at the end of Avengers when Earth was mentioned looked like a "Great Lay Memory" smile to me.

...that's... actually an apt interpretation of the smile at the end of the Avengers! But not because he visited Earth before. (He might or might not have in the Marvel Filmiverse.) Thanos (whose name is borrowed from a Greek word for death, btw, thanatos) has a haaarrrrrd crush on Marvel's living embodiment of Death and is trying to court her. Thus his grin at hearing his minion saying, "Whoever fights the Terrans is courting death." (That's partly because he was created by Jim Kirby when returning to Marvel after creating Darkseid for DC after helping create and write Thor. Whew... Darkseid seeking Anti-Life Equation == Thanos courting Death. If there isn't a Thanos/Thor story about "Death And Hel" somewhere already, there ought to be! The recursive style points alone would be staggering.)

Anyway the gist is that he doesn't give a poot for any woman less than Death.

More super-obscure but noteworthy trivia:

* The Badoon are the alien race most connected with Yondu as enemies (having slaughtered most of his people), and they were going to be who were helping Ronan in this film until Fantastic Four rights issues conflicted since they first appeared in the late 60s Silver Surfer series.

* I'm not sure the comics Peter Quill ever fought against Ronan, but for a while he was allied with Ronan as his military advisor!

* The original Guardian comic series, featuring Yondu as a key member of the team, eventually picked up Captain America and Sharon Carter as temporary members (displaced in time, since the series was set more than a thousand years in the future of the contemporary Marvel canon). Sharon Carter was introduced, though not very well, in the Cap 2 movie; so I wouldn't be too surprised if they get together with the Guardians sometime before, during, or after Avengers 3! -- though more likely during or after. This would also make room for Sam Wilson, the Falcon, to take over as Cap in the movie series on Earth, to better fit comics continuity (if they still have that going by then -- which I hope they do, it's a great idea to have Rogers go into management/retirement and let Wilson pick up the role.)

This had occurred to me, but the movies do take liberties.

I come back to the fact that Peter's mom called him her "little Star Lord" in the movie, possibly implying that his father is her big "Star Lord".  Who could be this nobleman from the stars?

Eros/Starfox?  Making Thanos Pete's uncle?  Starfox certainly got around, and has been to Earth.

Starfox, or a movie version of him, is definitely a contender, although there's no direct in-movie evidence for it (other than "your... pelvic sorcery!")

It remains to be seen how many Titans show up, but since Thanos is around that opens the doors.

Going back a bit: it isn't likely Drax is comic-canon, for he says which people Ronan destroyed and they weren't a human family and Ronan showed no evidence of even knowing about Earth, much less caring.

Comic-canon means little to the movie writers.  It is simply a starting point for their own concepts.

I wouldn't say it means little; the Studio series has done well mixing respect for comics-canon (both overtly and subtly) with a willingness to strike off in new directions while still staying true to the spirit of the original canon.

And Guardians may have the most little nods to obscure canon of all the movies so far even if they aren't employing the bits in a canonical way. Those two Nova Corps guys with the most lines played by beloved character actors? -- I mean who weren't Glenn Close's Nova Prime? Major Nova Corps characters in the comics; with different (sometimes very different) stories in the movie but still echoing their comic stories, sometimes in reversal. (Example: John C. Reilly's character in the comics lost his wife and child when Nebula destroyed most of Xandar, becoming in effect the movie's version of Ronan the Accuser! In the movie he fights the movie-version of his character in the comics, and doesn't lose his wife and child. That's kind of genius.)
