If you enjoy this, I'd also recommend checking out Netflix' Salem.  While more focused, it also has fewer slow-moving points in the storyline.

^Funny you mention that because I am halfway through the season of Salem that is on Netflix. It is surprisingly good! And the female lead is very Eva Green-esque, just more Evil.

The female lead can sprout a river from her eyeballs on command.  She does it at least half the scenes.  Made me wonder if she had to drink an extra gallon of water every day when filming.  Yet she still manages comes across as rather wicked. :o 

Most of the acting is excellent.  Some of these Netflix series has some high quality talent.

Just watched the 2nd episode of the 2nd season of Penny Dreadful...it only gets better and better.

In honesty I put Salem at a few tiers below Penny Dreadful. Salem is good, while Penny Dreadful is just a total spectacle. It may be a little unfair to pit them against each other, other than their supernatural subjects.

I wouldn't say "a few tiers below" because it's still higher quality than most cable series IMO.  Maybe I rank by fewer tiers than you, overall?  :P  It doesn't have the plot variety or budget of Penny Dreadful but it's not too far removed as far as the end result quality goes, minus some of the extra filmography quality, but has some similarly dark moments.  Continue watching the rest of the season.  :)


It seems Penny Dreadful is starting to climax towards this season's end.  Not sure how many are left after this week.  One episode?

Penny Dreadful is a Grade A production. Acting, special effects, sets, costumes...etc. Salem is very good but is strictly business class with a few really well placed scares, and occasionally some less than stellar acting. But I like them both...they are both right in my wheelhouse.

Watched the second last episode of season 2 last night and it set up the season finale as a 'Wow!' show. Spooky and suspenseful for sure.

I think that PD is my favorite show on TV and has taken over from The Walking Dead, True Detective and Game of Thrones for first place in my viewing habits.

Looks like we might be visiting Victorian Era Africa and America next season.

I'm glad that they gave this guy more airtime this season.  I get a kick out of him.

Yeah.  At first I figured they'd probably kill the Professor sometime this season, but it looks like he got a reprieve.  :)

With all the sour & dour of the other characters, he's really the only vaguely comedic one in the bunch.

Got some time alone so I just watched episode 3 of the most recent season on how Vanessa became the character we know. It is some of the best tv I have ever seen...I applauded at the end. Absolutely great production...better than most movies! Gotta watch one more before the family gets home :)

Just 2 1/2  seasons of SoA left to vinge on and I can start something new. I'll add Penny Dreadful to the list of candidates.
