Is there an in-game encyclopedia or anything which will quickly inform you as to the nature of your cargo?

I restarted the game and, during my very first in-system jump, I spotted an unidentified signal and went to check it out.  I found a wanted smuggler and proceeded to shoot him full of cohesive light.  I got a 10K credit bounty and he dropped 3 containers of Gaewan dance dust and 1 of leather.  I'd never used the cargo scoop before so I decided to pick them up.  I figured the stuff was most likely illegal based on the name alone but there was no way I could tell just from scanning it or checking it in my cargo manifest once I'd loaded it on board.    I wanted to go to a Federal system to collect the bounty reward but I didn't want to go waltzing in there with a hold full of contraband.  I went to an independent system but they wouldn't buy either the dust or the leather so I just ended up dumping the stuff outside the station and took on a scrap delivery contract instead.  I feel like the Sanford and Son of space.

Yeah...if you picked it up in space, then it is illegal contraband. Don't get scanned.

This evening I was happily milling about in an anarchy system with a African name.
Scooping up canisters of all kinds of stuff left behind by others and immediately dropping them off at one of the two outposts in the system for sale on the black market. Then accepted a mission to kill five pirates.

A quick cruise towards an USS yielded 2 pirates who were quickly dispatched by my burst lasers.
Picked up their cargo, quick turn around to one of the stations again to cash in. Things were going grand!

Then I cruised towards a Nav Beacon to get my three remaining tallies on some bad guys. The area around the beacon was very much alive with cargo ships coming in and a few pirates harassing them.
Ok... which target to take? Let's first keep a bit low and scan a few ships.

Then I spotted a Hauler being attacked by a Viper. Let's help the poor guy! After a pretty long fight (the Viper aparently is a hard target to take down with only 2 burst lasers on a Sidey) the Hauler quickly bailed and I could scoop up some cargo yet again! 4 out of 5 done now.
Then all of a sudden a red blip comes out of Frameshift, right on top of me! And in a matter of seconds, my canopy was shot to hell, oxygen leaking everywhere and my virtual life ended right there and then...

Didn't see him coming! Maybe he was a friend of the Viper pilot? I will never know, but what I do know is that it made me fail the mission... grr. 20k down the drain. But had loads of fun tonight!  O0

today i have dealt in nefarious doings and traded a lot of slaves but the real earner seems to be imperial slaves so im heading to the border of imperial/federation space about 150 light years away and ill sell and buy on either side of the border

i have also had my first brush with combat, got interdicted by a viper, i normally speed, boost and run but inspired by JH i thought id give self defence a bash

im such an amateur - forgot everything, started and finished with 3 to engines, 1 to shields and 1 to weapons instead of redistributing the power, finally got him in my sights and started firing gimballed burst lasers, missed him by miles, id forgotten to target him!! target him this time and on the first pass take his shileds down. I remember buying gimballed multi cannons for taking out the hull for just this very occurrence, did i remember at the time?

no

get him down to 12% hull without the cannons, and then he passes too close, hits me and explodes behind me, im still full shields!! no bounty, must have been either a player looking for lols or NPC with no reputation, dont care, hes space dust and my cobra isnt - awesome

before I get this I need to get a new joystick.  I dont want a whole HOTAS setup as I dont want the desk clutter.
so what are the recommendations?
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

I one day will have the blast everyone else is having. For me, at the moment, it's just simply awesome to fly around in. Singularly the best space flight sim out there. I've yet to see past it's beauty and immersion and find out what I can do in it without losing money hand over fist and feeling lost.

I'll get there...one day I'll get there.

you need to submit to a trading tool JD

has anyone noticed the beginnings of guilds, trade groups and whatnot yet in the multiplayer universe?

not yet, everything is very much based on your independence, although you can simply agree to not shoot a group youve arranged to meet

there are currently 3 player started civil wars across the map, people meet on the forum and decide what action to take to tip the balance

is it possible to give people money/credits in game?
I can see a group split between traders and mercs where those flying as mercs are cover for the traders.  but everyone needs to make money.

Glad to see you post this JD. Keep at it. Eventually, you'll find your grove.

As far as I know, no. But I have often thought this would be a good idea.  Only problem I see is that at some point, people would start selling credits for real money and that may be something the developer wants to avoid.

any chance of using a friendly trader as bait?  get some really rare cargo, find a hot contested spot or pirate region and play cover for the trader.  you get money for kills and they get trade profits.

early 15 is slated for the 'wings' capability - where traders can hire fighters as escorts, or fighters can team up
