Not only that, there's a real advantage to staying in one place: you learn what bases buy and sell, so when somebody offers big coin for 8 units of some off-the-wall mineral, you know where to find it.  And when there are no good missions available, you know how to make a decent profit by just moving commodities.

It's a great concept for encouraging spontaneous group efforts in MMOs.  May be quite different in Elite compared to the stock MMO format.

The alpha build of Star Made is technically free, as the devs make the full (alpha) game available in the demo, though the demo doesn't get updates as frequently. http://store.steampowered.com/app/244770/?snr=1_5_9__300 Gets tons of good reviews, and some quite hilarious ones.

So first thing I do when I get this game is jump onto multiplayer.
Servers kinda quiet, so I make a tiny shuttle ship and head to the nearest planet.
Planet bored me eventually so I mined it out and made a bigger ship.
At this point random guy starts talking to me, one thing leads to another.
I'm now flying his friend back to their home planet after he got stranded on a planet.
More stuff happens, we make a faction.
I start work on gigantic battleship thing with missile turrets the size of skyscrapers. (Ships can get really big in this game)
Notice the pirate station nearby has been shooting down my friends and I engage with my battleship in an epic fight to destroy it.
Pirate station blows up, but not before hitting my bridge with a missile while my shields were down, resulting in a spectacular explosion.
Ship that took 1 day to build = gone.
Me and friends log off the server to join some others and get into more space related mishap.

10/10 Would blow my time on going down with an expensive battleship again

Neither one of those comes even remotely close to competing with Elite. Yes, they are good games in their own right, but in a totally separate league. With over $60,000,000 raised, Star Citizen, on the other hand, had better be totally f@cking epic.

Rogue System is the one I'm looking forward to.  The idea the devs have is to make a space combat simulator with the level of detail and complexity you'd find in a DCS title such as A-10C or Black Shark.  It's pre-alpha right now and I'm not sure how much backing or press it's getting but I hope it all pans out.

Those Completionist prices on Star Citizen scare me.  What about the poor sod who only sinks $100-200 into the game?  Will I be able to play on anything like a level playing field?

Yes. From what I understand, everything can be purchased with in-game currency. These prices are just pre-alpha, pre-release nonsense, that appears to have totally paid off for Chris Roberts.
