Current Events / Re: Russia's War Against Ukrai...

Shoigu officially sacked! The Kharkiv assault must be going really well for someone!

Arguably this means the Russians will win now, depending on whether someone more competent is posted instead of a crony looter with no real experience for MDef. But it also kind of depends on whether the Russians have enough of anything left to win with. But it also kind of depends on whether the Ukrainians have enough of anything left to win with.

Throwing a mental dart at a randomized board on the inside of my brain, I came up with: 'Shoigu will be (very aptly) blamed for Russia needing to cap off hostilities for a while once the Kharkiv assault succeeds or fails.' I fully acknowledge that plenty of other things both sane and/or insane might be true also/instead, this being Russia.  :buck2:  :uglystupid2: But that feels like a cautiously optimistic hope/guess...?

Good thread idea. My Uncle Irving served in the 84th Railsplitters (US Army) but was a Navy engineer by training. By the end of 1944 the unit was made up of a hodgepodge of American troops from all over the place, every branch.

Irving was deployed somewhere in or near the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge. According to family history, he was killed when he fell into a trench or tank trap, and a tank fell in on top of him.

He was 26 years old. Like you, I know a lot about him but obviously never met him.

General Discussion / Memorial Day/Veterans Day reme...
Last post by bobarossa - May 15, 2024, 06:05:28 PM
In the USA, Memorial Day (last monday in May) is the day to commemorate veterans who died in service of the country.

I finally found the photo of my uncle Orlando Bapst in a bag of my mother's pictures that had been misplaced for years.  I never knew Lando as he died at the age of 22, 12 years before I was born.  Since he never lived long enough to have offspring and all his siblings have been gone for at least 10 years now, I decided he should be remembered by someone.

Lando was a member of Co C, 331 Inf Reg, 83 Infantry Div.  I did some checking and his division was located just west of the area of attack for Operation Cobra.  He died the day before Cobra was to kick off.  Hopefully he was not one of the 25 soldiers killed in a friendly fire bombing incident on that day.

Feel free to add remembrances of your relatives or friends who have died.  I changed my avatar to Lando's picture.  I know most of the world uses NOV 11 for this so you can wait until then if you want.

I watched this last night.   Found it very frustrating because all the parts were there to make a good movie.  The sets were good.  Budget was good.  Everything looked great.  It's loosely based on a true story which was pretty nuts and should have made for a very good, high risk commando raid type story.  Sadly, the tone was way off for me.  Guy Ritchie decided to portray the commandos/SOE agents as a wacky band of hyper-competent unconventional misfits and the Axis and Spanish forces as bumbling morons so there was no sense of risk or tension at all.  To me, it came across as a bad combination of an episode of The A-Team, Hogan's Heroes, and Inglorious Bastards.

Really wanted to like it but it left me cold in the end because it could have and should have been so much better than it was.

Looks like Ghosts will suffer the same fate.

However, it is being stated by the company in this article the account is not required for single player mode, although I certainly understand people who want to do online co op would be impacted, especially in the countries that can't even get an account.  Seems like they are leaving a lot of money on the table by not finding a different way to handle online modes and they are certainly going to be crushed by review bombs.  At least for me, I only play single player mode so plan to enjoy it for what it is.

Building my appetite for Tsushima. 20+ years on and the original Shogun Total War Kublai Khan campaign has still got it.

Believe for multiplayer an account is required, not for single player.
