The Thing was crap. The rest of those were pretty good, though. I was in California - Ft Ord. Only time in my life I was in school on my birthday until a summer session in grad school.

+1
Strange that such an old movie has special effects that, for me anyway, still hold up well even to this day. And no CGI crap, either.

Wuuuuuuut?!! That movie is still great.
We're gonna send an awesomely bearded Kurt Russell to eliminate you for such heresy.
This was such a great thread until that point.

On another note:
It's amazing how much of a sci-fi rush sprung out of the $uccess of the original Star Wars. That's not to say it created the genre, but it certainly pushed the film industry, and others, to invest more effort into producing them.
After it's 1977 craze, the media was flooded with those attempting to jump on the bandwagon. With varied results. But for years it continued, and we got wonderful stuff like these. So, yeah, thank you again Star Wars movie.
There was a lull in decent sci-fi movies in the 90s and 00s, but that trend looks to be slowly reversing in recent years. Especially since zombies, the supernatural, post-apoc, and true sci-fi like Guardians Of The Galaxy have become so popular. Sure, there are plenty of shitty remakes which lose part of the original's vibe, but at least we're getting some these days. There for awhile, it was rather barren.
Krull remains one of my favorites from the early 80s.
Wasn't Tron in 1982 also? Maybe not the summer.
Poltergeist is still scary. And the Mom in it is still hot. Way to go Craig T. Nelson!
iMDB says Tron was released July 9, 1982. Spot on, Gus!

Although it was released in March 1982, Porky's could still be seen at drive-ins in the summer of '82.

Not sure Porky's makes it into the sci-fi genre.
The Thing was great. Now, E.T....that sucked balls.
I was 11 in 1982 and I thought ET was lame.
They were playing D&D in E.T. It can't be THAT lame ;)

Agreed, The Thing is a masterpiece. ET is typical Spielberg bullshit. :)
Never saw ET.
Hey what about Tron? :coolsmiley:
Saw that one. My rock is next to the local drive-in.
Out of all of them I think Poltergeist is my favorite. My parents would not let me see it at the time of release.
I think the first 'scary' movie I saw was Amityville Horror, I must have been 9 or 10...one of my friend's older brothers (it's always the older brothers) put it on HBO, I think...maybe a tape. Anyway, it totally scared the shit out of me and it was on my mind for weeks after.
How the hell is Wrath of Khan not the favorite?
Wrath of Khan I saw in the theater when it was new...it may have been the first time I was allowed to go to the movies without adults. The ear weevil scene is burned into my psyche.
But I am more of a ghost story guy at heart. Thus Poltergeist.
Come on, Wrath of Khan had it all. Ricardo Montalban was jacked. Kirstie Alley was hot. Spock died. And Kirk yelled, "Khaaaaaaaan!"

He identifies more with the midget psychic chic who comes to house in Poltergeist than any of the Star Trek characters
^nailed it.
I spent most of the early 80's working my butt of and chasing women. But I managed to see all of those movies while verticle and Blade Runner would be my pick as best of the litter. Though all of them were a little on the dumb side. I was reading Tolkien then and so was hard to impress.
I was reading Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke. Most movies I saw never had a chance. Reading good sci-fi means you're going to be disappointed with most sci-fi films.

I
love Poltergeist dearly, it's one of my favourite films. For me, the first film I was "banned" from seeing was The Exorcist, thus ensuring I'd see it at the first opportunity. It's also now one of my favourite films!
Thank you Huw. The rest of you can suckle it.
The Exorcist, to me, is the all time most frightening movie ever made and my favorite of all time. I don't remember my first viewing of it though...
Mine was at the local Drive-In. With 2 very easily frightened young, attractive girls that sat real close when scared. O0 I liked that movie.
Ha...my mom refused to let me near The Exorcist for years...I wanted to read the book and she was all "nooooope not gonna happen."
When I finally DID see it...the movie that is...I remember thinking..."Okay...well that wasn't all that bad."
What movies are more frightening to you than The Exorcist BC?
Night of the Lepus was damn scary

But getting laid sure was fiction in my world at the time.
I've watched The Exorcist exactly once. I refuse to watch it again. I'm already going to hell, I don't need a preview. Another one I saw once and refuse to watch again is Rosemary's Baby. The original Omen movie is like that, too. Just remember, just because you don't believe in the Devil, doesn't mean he doesn't believe in you.
Any movie with Star Trek in the title made by Jar Jar Abrams scares the hell out of me. ::)
Heaven's where it's going to be tough. How are you going to sue anyone there? All the lawyers and judges are..... I know you heard it before. :uglystupid2: In my version of hell, nothing would be on TV but The View and The Batchelor. That's why I Be Good. O:-)
I love The Omen (the original, 1972 I think) and Rosemary's Baby (the original, 1968). Frightening movies well-acted without resorting to cheap tricks or ridiculous over the top effects. Classics!
There were several sequels to the Exorcist. The 3rd one I think, with George C Scott in it scared the hell out of me. Almost as bad as the original. The hospital scene at night where the nurse got her :buck2: cut off was the worst. I ALWAYS thought about that one whenever I worked night shift.

I finally got around to watching the third one last year, and yeah...it's pretty damn scary.
It took a long time for me to finally sit and watch it because the second one is in the running for the shittiest, most hilariously bad movie that I have ever seen. Unless everyone involved in that mess was a raging cokehead, there is no explanation for the awfulness that was crapped out on film.
Hahaha. I need to watch 3 now. I actually didn't mind 2 all that much, although Richard Burton's performance was absolutely horrible and kind of ruined it. Blair did a very good job with what she was given, to be fair to her.
What about the prequels? I have both...apparently the prequel was on its way to being decent until a studio bod stepped in and basically turned it into a different film...? But the original vision ended up being made anyway, or something. I'm sure I've watched one of them and it turned out to be crap but I haven't seen the other.
There's Exorcist prequels???
Exorcist II is total crap, agreed.
And that one scene above in Exorcist III is totally undie-soiling. The first time I saw it I was awake for a week afterwards. There is no warning at all, and the shot it set up very Kubrick-like: long hallway, lots of ordinary sites and sounds and then...WHAM
Isn't Exorcist III based on William Peter Blatty's 'Legion'?
I've wanted to read that for a long time too. Amazon had a special hardcover edition combo of The Exorcist and Legion on sale for 50.00 a few years back. I didn't buy it...
Now it's worth 250.00+ :/
N/m, didn't read the previous post correctly. :(
That's the scene I thought about everytime I was working alone on the nightshift and heard a rustle.... behind me.... or maybe beside me. Freddy and Jason never scared me but movie sure did.

Alien gave me nightmares for years.
Poltergeist gave me a healthy fear of dolls...fuck those things.
And Alien dolls..... with clown make-up. Hell No.
Have you seen The Changeling with George Scott, Gus? That was a good one.
When I think of horror and the summer of 82, I tend to conflate it accidentally with the unofficial werewolf trilogy of 1981: Wolfen, The Howling, and American Werewolf in London, all of which were groundbreaking films in various ways (though Wolfen is much less famous nowadays.)

But I did see The Changeling with George C. Scott...I acfually own it on DVD!
I love American Werewolf in London as well.
But for sheer terror nothing beats the original Exorcist. The Shining comes close. But the Exorcist is king.
